An American Press Jewish Feature

The phrase, "My ancestors
Came to this country aboard the
Mayflower," is one of the best
known stock expressions in
American history. Little has
ever been recorded, however,
about the 23 Jewish "Pilgrims"
who in 1654, only 34 years after
the Mayflower landing at Plym-
outh Rock, disembarked at Man-
hattan Island, then called New
Amsterdam.
Leaving their homes in Europe
to escape religious intolerance,
this band of Jews braved the
perils of seas, faced capture by
a pirate ship, were rescued by a
French privateer and finally
landed at the Dutch settlement
in Sept., 1654, where they found-
ed the first Je- /ish Community
and built Shearith Israel Con-
gregation, the second religious
structure in New York. Only the
Dutch Reformed Church was
previously organized.
In the years that followed,
foundations for other syna-
gogues were laid. In 1658 the
Jewish settlement at Newport,
R.I., began Touro Synagogue,
which was dedicated in 1763.
This beautiful structure has
been designated as a national
historical shrine.
Settlements soon followed,
with the development of the
country, in Philadelphia, Savan-
ah aid Charleston, which in
