Murderer of Jew's
Seeks Refuge Here

WASHINGTON (JTA)-Immi-
gration authorities are consid-
ering an application of Andrija
Artukovic, former Minister of
Justice of the Nazi puppet state
of Croatia, for permission to re-
main in the United States as a
displaced person.
Artukovic has claimed that he
is a refugee from. Communism.
He was discovered several weeks
ago at Surfside, an exclusive re-
sort colony near Los Angeles.
The Yugoslavian Government
has asked the State Department
to extradite Artukovic so that
he may be brought to trial for
crimes against humanity. Dr.
Mirko Bruner, First Secretary of
Yugoslavian Embassy, has re-
ported that papers have been
found proving that Artukovic
boasted in a speech at Zagreb
that he "solved Croatia's Jew-
ish problem." Virtually all the
Jews over whom Artukovic had
custody were brutally extermin-
ated, according to the Yugosla-
vian Embassy and American in-
telligence agents who served in
the Balkans.

UJA Funds Aided
628,000 Since Jan.

More than 628,000 Jews in Is-
rael, Europe, Moslem lands and
this country were aided to be-
gin new lives or spared suffer-
ing as a result of immigration,
settlement and rehabilitation
aid during the first six months
of 1951 extended by agencies
which receive their funds
through the nationwide cam-
paign of the United Jewish Ap-
peal, Edward M. M. Warburg,
UJA general chairman report-.
ed.
He revealed that while the
UJA campaign was preceeding
favorably in most communities,
the_ UJA's constituent agencies
the United Palestine Appeal,
Joint Distribution Committee
and United Service for New Am-
ericans were forced to earmark
sums far in excess of UJA's cash
income to carry out urgent
settlement and absorption pro-
grams for homeless Jews arriv-
ing in Israel, relief and welfare
services in Europe and Moslem
lands and aid to newcomers in
this country.
In all, during the six months,
the UJA agencies budgeted $74,-
994,000 for their work, about one
third more than the cash funds
received by the UJA.

Israel Bonds Used As
Barton's Rent Security

State of Israel Dollar Bonds
are being offered as rent secur-
ity by Barton's, leading New
York chain candy store; it has
been announced by Herbert Ten-
zer, chairman of the board of
the confectionery manufactur-
ing and retailing firm.
Barton's, which has 49 retail
outlets, was required to deposit
securities with landlords under
the terms of the leases for a
number of these stores. These
funds are held in escrow against
fulfillment -of the retailer's
]ease. Mr. Tenzer has commun-
icated with each landlord and
asked his agreement to permit
Barton's to substitu,te the Israel
Bonds for other securities now
deposited. Barton's has agreed
to execute any agreement neces-
sary to give effect to the land-
lord's consent, and will accept
the bonds as a return of the
security at the expiration of the
lease.

At Haifa, the Labor Council
Executive approved the refinery
workers' strike starting Thurs-
day. The decision followed the
refinery management's refusal
to reincrease wage demands.
The number of workers at the
refinery is 600.
