Tunes and Undertones
The Horst Wessel and other Nazi tunes are again being heard
throughout the length and width of Germany. Hundreds of Jew-
ish tom, stones are being desecrated. In public gatherings Ger-
mans lustily shout: Juden heraus! Amerikaner heraus!
We are witnessing a bold attempt at reviving Fascism on a
world-wide scale with three main focus points: Germany, Ar-
gentina and Spain. •
'Nevertheless, only a few weeks ago the executive committee
of the American Jewish Committee adopted a statement of policy
"favoring a positive position on the question of Germany's , place in
the free world."
Can Jews. be disunited on the question of Germany? The
democratic world is startled and gravely perturbed by the rise of
Nazism. What hope is there for Jewish survival if in face of such
a menacing development the Jewish defense . agencies cannot
agree on a common policy and a great united effort? They must
convince Washington that the cause of democracy will be hope-
lessly compromised if Germany is permitted to rearm and to "join
the family of democratic nations." Can we trust the Bonn Gov-
ernment which sends a Nazi diplomat to Brazil, glorifies Abetz,
and gives the neo-Nazi leader, Richter, not only 'a visa but a letter
of recommendation when he recently visited Sweden?
The Jewish community has taken too complacent a view, and
for too long a time, of the Jewish defense problem. This is one
field of activity in which disunity is intolerable and suicidal. We '
must be able to form a united front against the common enemy.
The American Jewish Congress has shown initiative and leader-
ship in the right way.
There is no question hOw 99% of our people feel with regard
to Germany. If a certain number of Jews constitute themselves
as a committee and wish to follow their own specific and different
ideas, they are free to do so provided they depend for support on
their own membership, and do not turn to the welfare funds and
the community at large for funds.
. It will prove the most fatal blunder to underestimate neo-
Nazism. The Associated Press quotes German industrialists who
predicted that in 1953 neo-Nazism will be in force in Germany.
Of course, if the American Jewish Committee is in favor .of
admitting Germany to the "democratic family of nations," why
wonder if the U. S. admits Baltic S.S. men to this country?
We have not heard whether the protests of the Jewish organ-
izations against this development have been effective. Altogether
too many questions remain open.
What are our defense agencies doing about Artukovitch the
Yugoslavian mass murderer? He has been in . this. country already
for three years. An investigation of this scandalous affair is im-
perative. How many other Artukovitch's are here in the USA? '
Is anything being done to counteract the rise of Fascism in
Latin America? Thus far, our defense agencies don't dare even
to denounce it.
What efforts are being made to prevent various Latin Ameri-
can countries from continuing 'their practice of refusing visas to
naturalized U. S. Jewish citizens? This scandalous situation has
existed for years.
What is being done about Pegler who continues his vicious
campaign of bracketing Jewish names with Communism? In his
column of June 28 he welcomes the Smith act, asks for sentence
of death not only for Communists, but New Dealers, mentioning by
name two men; the spy, Rosenberg, -and Felix Frankfurter.
Our defense agencies are not publicity shy. They distribute
frequent releases about letters written to government departments,
embassies, about talks with the President,-- too-but too rarely are
we informed about their final results.
Less publicity and more effective action would be welcomed
and in better taste.
