from "Dos Wort" Thanking the

Schumers
An echo of gratitude for the
kindnesses of the Harry Schu-
mers towards their relatives in
Israel was heard here this week
with the arrival of a copy of
"Dos Wort," a Yiddish news-
paper published in Tel Aviv on
Sundays, Tuesdays and Thurs-
days.
While in Israel, the Schumers
located Mrs-. Schumer's cousins
who were in dire straits. They
purchased a home for them.
Now, a year later, these cousins
inserted the above advertise-
ment in 'Dos Wort." It reads:

8,000 Legends Sifted
By Goer for New Book
On Old Testament Lore

The rich folklore of the Old
Testament, hitherto known only
to a handful of Biblical scholars,
is the subject of Joseph Gaer's
new book, "The Lore of the Old
Testament," to be published
Sept. 6 by Little, Brown and Co.
In preparation for this book,
Mr. Gaer estimates he has sifted
over 8,000 legends, parables, be-
liefs and romantic stories which
have grown up around the Old
Testament and have been pre-
served in Hebrew, Islamic, and
other literatures. This will be
the first time such an impor-
tant source book has . appeared
in English, and will include over
300 legends, arranged chrono-
logically so that their collective
significance helps to interpret
the basic significance of their
mainspring, the Old Testament.
Mr. Gaer has been interested
in, Biblical lore ever since his
childhood in Bessarabia where
his grandmother repeated many
of these legends to him.

RCA Victor Releases
Sacred Music Album

An album of Hebrew liturgical
music by Cantor Leibele Wald-
man, who has been acclaimed
for his remarkable voice and
his skill in cantorial singing and
secular song, has been released
by RCA Victor.
The album, available on con-
ventional and 45 rpm record
speeds, is titled "Liturgical Mas-
terpieces presented by Cantor
Leibele Waldman" and consists
of six chants which have been
sung from time immemorial as
part of Jewish religious services.
Two of them, "L'Fichoch Ana-
chnu Chayuvim" and "Al Huri-
shonim" are included in the
morning service of the Orthodox
ritual, while "Ki Keshimcho",
"Odom Yesodo Meofor," "Sarfe
Maloh" and "Zochrenu Bezikor-
on" are part of the service for
the Jewish High Holy Days of
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
