For Community Service;
Ad Brings Results
Typical of the testimonials re-
ceived by The Jewish News is a
letter sent in this week by a sub-
scriber to the paper. It reads:
"I'm certain that much too in-
frequently are well earned bou-
quets extended to newspapers,
so may I take this opportunity
of expressing our sincere ap-
preciation to The Jewish .News
for their assistance in finding
most comfortable living quarters
for my mother recently.
"We advertised in your classi-
fied section for a three-room
income, and that very weekend,
Mother was the happy occupant
of a lovely three-room income
apartment.
"I know the demand for living
quarters is greater than the sup-
ply, and we do consider ourselves
fortunate in securing these
rooms. We do feel, too, that
placing an ad with your paper
was solely responsible for our
success.
"Thanking you again for your
paper's service to us and to De-
troit's Jewish community, I
remain,
Sincerely yours,
Mrs. B. Besman

OPEN SUNDAY 2-5
NEW YORK (AJP) - A high
Jewish Agency official's cable-
gram that the much-postponed
World Zionist Congress would
open as scheduled in Jerusalem
on Aug. 14, squelched rampant
rumors both here and in Israel
that the gathering of to Zion-
ist leaders and delegates would
be delayed several weeks.
The cable from Beryl Locker,
chairman of the executive com-
mittee of the Jewish Agency,
was received at headquarters of
the Agency's American section
here.
One Zionist organization dis-
closed that a number of travel
agencies, heavily booked with
reservations from Americans
planning to be in Israel to wit-
ness the historic congress, had
shown concern over the possibil-
ity of a postponement.

Israel to Receive
Italy's Surplus Wheat
WASHINGTON, (JTA) - Se.c-
retary of State Dean Acheson
told the House Foreign Affairs
Committee that the U S govern,
meat plans "to .make stronger
the several points" in the Near
East "and to help other cowl ,
tries s t r en g t h e n themselves
against internal subversion "
Israel will receive part of
Italy's unused wheat allocation.
for the period ending July 31, it
was learned here, thus reducing
Israel's need for open-market
purchases.
Israel, which had a quota of
160,000 tons of wheat fixed by
the International Wheat Council
for the year ending July 31, had.
to buy an additional 60,000 tons
at a price of $20 a ton over the
price set by the export quota
agreement.
An application was made to
the Council at its meeting in.
London to increase the Israel.
quota to 280,000 in view of the
increase in the Israel population,
the dependence of a large part
of the population on bread as
a major item of diet and the
failure of the Israel wheat crop
this year.
The Council decided not to in-
crease, quotas for any country,.
but re-establish the same quotas.
for the coming year as for the
past year. However, the Council;
agreed that surplus, unused
wheat quotas would be made
available in _part at least to
Israel.
