ONE OF THE MOST generous
contributions to the Allied Jew-
ish Campaign .. . although not
one of the largest . . came to
William Avrunin, associate di-
rector of the Jewish Welfare
Federation from Francis A.
Kornegay, a Negro social work-
er on the staff of the Detroit
Urban League . . . He was a stu-
dent in Avrunin's course at the
University of Michigan Social
Work Institute, last season, and
made his annual contribution
through Bill . . In previous
years he had made contributions
through the Jewish leader prob-
ably best known to the Negro
citizens of Detroit . . . the late
Fred M. Butzei.

BATTALION CHIEF JOSEPH
ADLER is a veteran of 33 years
with the local fire dept . .
and always ready to cope with
any emergency .. But the
type of emergency that occur-
ed, last week, wasn't exactly
along his lines of duty . . <
Grandpappy Adler served as
baby-sitter for daughter, Julie,
and Eddie Sparage . . . taking
care of their young son after
Julie had given birth to a baby
girl at Women's Hospital • .
Only fathers and grandmoth-
ers are allowed to visit the
maternity ward, causing Ad-
ler to remark, "We grand-
fathers just don't count. But
we sure do make terrific baby-
sitters!"

FROM THE LOOKS of things,
it_ won't be too long before an
organization of kosher caterers
in Detroit will finally be a real-
ity .. .A meeting was held, last
week, at which get-together
terms were agreed upon . .
and a letter will be sent to all
kosher caterers informing them
that the wheels have begun to
roll toward organization.

WATCHING THE GREAT Ben
Hogan tee off at the National
Open Golf Tourney, last week,
at Oakland Hills, golf beginner
Myron Stotsky, looking a bit
puzzled, said, "I can't under-
stand it. That's exactly how I
swing my club, stance and all.
Only trouble is that he hits the
ball and I don't!"

GEORGE MASKIN, sports
writer with the Detroit Times,
was named winner in the fea-
ture-writing class for papers
with 50 ;000 or over circulation
, . at a meeting, last week, in
Omaha, of the nation's college
baseball coaches . . . He'll re-
ceive a special scroll from the
coaches . . . George joined the
paper while still in Intermediate
School . • . and is now celebrat-
ing his twentieth anniversary on
the Times sports staff.

WHEN RABBI JOSHUA SPER-
KA leaves for Israel, July 14, he
will be going alone on silent or-
ders from his four year-old
daughter, Ahava ... Except for
the little lady, wife, Yetta, also
would make the trip . . . but
baby Ahava just can't be without
mommy for the five-week stretch
... Rabbi Sperka is chairman of
the Detroit branch of the League
of :Religious Labor in Israel .. .
and will devote a great portion
of his time touring and visiting
the religious labor colonies.

MRS. THEODORE LEVIN had
expected to go on a boat ride,
last Friday, but spent the after-
noon as hostess to nearly 200
women ... members of the JewL
ish Welfare Federation Women's
Division who attended the divi-
sion's annual meeting and work-
ers' party .. • When the Steamer
Put-in-Bay was unable to sail,
Mrs. Levin graciously invited the
ladies to her home . . . and a
lovely, if not so nautical time
'was- had. by_ all.

LOU BERRY, it would seem,
never has much opportunity for
relaxation . . what with his
mammoth real estate dealings
that include buying of hotels
and buildings all over the coun-
try . . . But Lou freely admits
that he does have a hobby . .
to • which he enjoys devoting
much of his valued time . . . His
huge office atop the David Stott
Bldg., (owned by International
Hotels, of which Lou is presi-
dent) is constantly buzzing with
activity in one way or another
. . . with local and long distance
phone calls a small part of the
daily agenda . . . But almost
each day, for about 20 minutes,
everything seems to stop . .
The phone in his office doesn't
ring on orders from Lou to his
secretary, and all work clam-
oring for attention on his desk
is brushed aside . . . This is the
period devoted strictly to Joe
Holtzman and to Lou's hobby
. . . fund-raising . . . The two
great workers for such efforts as
the Allied Jewish Campaign, of
which Lou was chairman, last
year, get down to the business
of fund-raising . . . and nothing
in the world can interfere with
their meeting . . . This may be
just a hobby to Lou, but it af-
fords him all the relaxation he
needs . . . knowing that the dol-
lars he helps raise will make life
easier for others less fortunate.
