UN Wrangles Over Suez Canal;
Israel Asks Action Against Egypt

Stutchkov Wins 1951

Yiddish Literature Prize

UNITED NATIONS, (JTA)—A
spokesman for the Israel dele-
gation to the United Nations
said that the Egyptian blockade
of Israel-bound shipping
through the Suez Canal must
be considered by the United
Nations Security Council as a
problem involving international
interests.
In a statement commenting
on the ruling by Maj. Gen. Wil-
liam E. Riley, Chief of Staff of
the UN Truce Supervision Or-
ganization in Palestine, regard-
ing Israel's complaint against
Egypt for denying free passage
of Israel-bound vessels through
the Canal, the spokesman Said:
"General Riley makes it clear
that Egypt has been engaged
for two years in an 'aggressive
and. hostile act' contrary to the
object of the armistice agree-
ment between Israel and Egypt.
"This considered judgment
by the authorized representative
of the United Nations follows
the action of the Israel Govern-
ment in initiating a discussion
in the Security Council in No-
vember. 1905. Moreover, wider
international interests are also
involved. Nearly all of the mari-
time powers have protested at
various times against Egypt's
action.
"Israel agrees with General
Riley that the matter cannot

rest where it is, and has no
doubt that further consideration
of the problem by the Security
Council must follow. At the
same time, it is difficult to see
how an 'aggressive and hostile
act' by Egypt against Israel can
be regarded as lying outside the
jurisdiction of the Egypt-Israel
Mixed Armistice Commission."

Britain Will Not Bring Canal
Issue Before Security Council
LONDON, (JTA) — The Bri-
tish Government does not con-
sider it necessary to raise in the
ITN Security Council the ques-
tion of Egypt's blockade of the
Suez Canal against Israel-bound
shipping because the Jewish
state has already placed the
matter on the Council agenda,
an official spokesman said here.
He said that the British Gov-
ernment expects that the Coun-
cil will consider the question
after Gen. Riley reports on the
situation.
Asked if the British Govern-
ment has confidence in Gen. -
Riley, the spokesman answered
affirmatively, pointing out that
the General is an official of the
UN. which Britain supports. It
is known that British official
circles were surprised by Riley's
ruling in favor of Egypt on the
Suez Canal blockade issue.

Notes on the UN

The record of the. UN as a protector of human rights is deeply
disappointing. The Declaration of Human Rights remains a scrap
of paper. And the genocide resolution remains academic. The
freedom of the press, instead of being strengthened by the UN, is
in jeopardy if the UN continues to proceed along the lines it has
been following . . . The International Court of Justice has ruled
that Columbis end the asylum it has given that last two and a
half years to Raoul Haya de la Torre, famous Peruvian rebel
leader. This action will arouse dismay not only in Latin Amer-
ica. It will not enhance the prestige of the International Court.
It represents an additional blow against the UN ... Israel is being
knocked around by the UN. It may yet regret that it ever joined.

Heard and Recorded

Ben-Gurion's statement that the government of Israel is pro-
viding religious education was quite a surprise to many Americans
accustomed to the idea of separation of church and state. Theo-
dor Herzl proclaimed the principle that "religion is a private
affair. Herzl, they say, was closer to the American concept than
Ben-Gurion."

Stalin Claims Adam and Eve

Soviet Russia is boasting of having invented everything. The
other- day Molotov told Stalin that Adam and Eve were Russians.
Stalin asked sternly: Have you any evidence. "Indeed," replied
Molotov, "there is irrefutable evidence. Adam and Eve had no
clothes, they had no roof over their heads and they had nothing
to eat except apples. Still they felt they were in paradise. They
