Thoughts and
Reflection

By RABBI MOSES FISCHER

The great Jewish philosopher,
Moses Mendelson, was °nee
asked by a "lightweight Jew":
"'Master, what are the conditions
under which a well-minded and
conscientious Jew may abandon
and forsake the heavy yoke of
the Torah and those of her Laws
which he considers anti-quated
and out of date?" The great .
philosopher answered the ques-
tioner: "God gave us the law
publicly amidst fire and thunder
on the mountain of Sinai; we
have accepted and sworn alle-
giance to the Torah in the pres-
ence of Heaven and earth. Soon
as the Lord will please to reveal
Himself again before our people
and publicly release us from our
oath of loyalty to the Torah—
soon as He will declare clearly
in terms that can not be mis-
understood that the laws are
no more binding and valid—
then and not before then may
we free ourselves conscientiously
from the observance of the
Torah: whose laWs revive the
soul, lighten the eyes: whose
study was the sacred music of
our forefathers down the age8
to our days." •
Judah Halevi, the great pas-
sionate 'gard and songster of
Zion. sings in one of his poems:
"Z icon, even if thou has no kinge,
though thy palaces have been
turned to ruins and shambles,
though thy blessed soil flowing
with milk and honey became a
wasteland barren and turned to
stone„ though poisonous ser-
pents and snakes abound in
thee—I kiss thy ground and it
is sweeter to me than honey!"
How good is our portion and
blessed our heritage that we
children of our generation may
behold Zion with a president at
its head, with a parliament, a
university, with world famous
teachers of the Torah and men
of genius, and science! Indeed,
if we kiss Thy ground it is
sweeter than honey.
The Sabbath is the crown of
glory, the golden emblem of per-
fection which God has placed
upon the brow of the Universe;
the Sabbath is the inviolable
seal of God which proclaims
that He is the Creator, the Lord
and Master of the Universe, the
Father of all Mankind, that the
earth is a holy ground upon
which the laws of God must
prevail and rule. On the Sab-
bath, therefore, we must not
pursue our gains and occupa-
tions, we must not toil and work
to satisfy our greed; the Sab-
bath must be sanctified and
hallowed to the God-seeking,
God - worshipping, God-search-
ing soul !
