Emigration from Iraq Extended thru
June; UJA Must Rescue More. Jews

A May 31 deadline by which
time Je •ish emigration from
Iraq to Ise el was to have ended
under decree of the Iraq gov-
ernment has ec extended un-
til June 30, thereby providing 'a
last minute opportunity for res-
cue of additional tens of thous-
ands of the 30,000 Jews remain-
ing in that country, Edward M.
M. Warburg, general chairman
of - the United Jewish Appeal,
disclosed this week.
Mr. Warburg announced that
the UJA had been advised by
immigration authorities in Is-
rael that negotiations to extend
the May 31 deadline had been

successfully completed, and that
the UJA must make available at
once large cash funds to con-
tinue the air evacuation of Jews
from Baghdad to Israel at the
present rate of nearly 1,000 a
day. •
The United Jewish Appeal
General Chairman pointed out
that since May 1950, when the
Iraqi Government imposed a one
year limitation of Jewish emi-
gration, 90,000 Jews had been
flown to Israel from that coun-
try, more than 65,000 of them
since January 1950, with funds
allocated to United Palestine
Appeal.

Mrs. Chajes Tells
Of New Conditions

By Marguerite Kozenn Chajes
VIENNA—Austria has changed
considerably since I visited it
last, two years ago. The Mar-
shall aid or European Recovery
plan has done miracles for the
country and to the people. Ev-
erybody seems to be calm and
untouched by the fact that Vi-
enna is a border line between
the East and West or politically
termed between the Soviets and
the Western Allies. Nazidom is
flourishing here as much as in
1938 and one expects even more
encouragement and prestige for
it because of the recent victory
of the Neo-Nazis in the Saxony
elections in Germany.
There are . at present only
8,000 Jews living in Austria from
a prewar Jewish population of
200,000. Many of them came back
from Shanghai, Israel and also
from the U. S. They have been
subject to criticism, for their re-
turn to a country which has
mistreated them.
Lawyers, who could not prac-
tice their professions in foreign
countries, and former owners-of
large firms, apartment houses,
factories, etc., who had a strag-
gle while away, are now living
again easily on the incomes of
their V rightful properties. They
benefit from the restitution of
their assets, the U. S. or Israel
passport and the higher stand-
ards they learned in those coun-
tries.
The status of the Jew has
improved, in contrast to the
shabbily dressed people I saw at
the ceremonies of the Herzl
transfer in 1949. I watched the
elegant crowd at the reception
of the Israeli consul in Vienna,
Arie Eshel, on the occasion of
"Yam, Haatsmauth" (Independ-
ence Day).
Apart from a manifestation in
the Konzerthaus, at which an
audience of approximately 2000
people participated, the Israeli
consul held two receptions at
✓
his home, for Jewish dignitaries,
Israeli citizens, diplomatic corps,
and local politicians.
The manifestation at the Kon-
zerthaus was attended by Buer-
germeister Theodore Koerner of
Vienna, the successful Socialist
candidate for Austrian Presi-.
dency.
Mr. Eshel, German-born, in
Palestine was for a long time a
member of Kibbutz Givat Bren-
ner: He later became representa-
tiVe bf Solel Bone in Iraq, and
member of "the Jewish Agency.
I had an opportunity to- get
interesting information about
the latest Jewish DPs from Har-
old Trobe, director of JDC work
in Austria. The .infamous Roths-
. child- hospital, with a capacity
for 800 people, held more than
6000 when I last saw it. It is
the very same DP camp which
was visited by UN Palestine In-
quiry Commission in 1948. It is
now a rather quiet place with
only 600 occupants who will
leave shortly for the U. S. and
other. countries. There are only
three Jewish camps left in Aus-
tria, "With 3,000 displaced per-
sons.:
The Viennese Jewish com
munity is again under the lead-
ership of the "Kultus Gemeinde,"
which is supported by the JDC.
I have been invited to lecture
before a joint session of the gen-
eral Zionists and the WIZO
(Wornen's Zionist orga.nization)
_Vienna.
