Newly elected officers of the
Department of Michigan. Jew-
ish War Veterans, elected dur-
ing the three-day conclave of
the organization, June 1 to 3,
are: Ben Desenberg, command-
er: Irving Bogorad, senior vice-

junior vice-commander; Harry
Kelle r, quartermaster; Jack
Kraizman, judge advocate.
The Convention was climaxed
with a banquet Sunday night at
which Henry Albert. national
JWV commander, was the prin-
cipal speaker. He lauded Mich
igan's JWV members for the
erection of 'a magnificent liv-
ing memorial to the memories
of our dead heroes" and for
the position that JWV has es-
tablished for itself in Detroit
and throughout the State. Al-
bert also announced that the
initial meeting - of the newly
formed JWV Commission
Against Communism would be
held in Boston at the end of
June. He warned against at-
tempts of subversive elements
to infiltrate into the reputable
groups and reaffirmed the posi-
tion of the veterans in support
of civil rights. He urged close
cooperation with the Commu-
nity Council, through the Mich-
igan Committee on Civil Rights,
to obtain an FEPC law
Mr. Albert was presented with
a resolution adopted by the De-
troit Common Council welcom-
ing him to the city. The pre-
sentation was made by Louis D.
Miriani, Common Council Presi-
dent.. Other guests at the con-
vention were Governor G. Men-
nen Williams, Senator Blair
Moody and Mayor Albert Cobo.

visit to the Convention was Sid-
ney Bookbinder of Newark, N.J.,
JWV national chief of staff.
The convention also adopted
resolutions urging the President
of the United States and the
United States delegation to the
United Nations Security Com-
mission to support Israel's. ef-
forts to continue with the Huleh
drainage project. Another reso-
lution urged repeal of the Mc-
Carran - Act as. a violation of
civil rights. The body voted ap-
preciation to the Jewish Com-
munity Council for its consis-
tent service during the year to
JWV.
Dr. Shmarya Kleinman, presi-
dent of the Community Coun-
cil. and B. M. Joffe, executive
director, were honored with cit-
ations at the convention. Cere-
monies in honor of the two
Council leaders were held at a
• special session. In his presenta-
tion Norman L. Berkley, retir-
ing department c o m m a n d e r,
for service to the community.

Rabbi Herschel Lymon, di-
rector of the Foundation, which
serves near -. 2,000 Jewish stu-
dents with a religious, social and
cultural program, will officiate
at the ritual of the laying of
the cornerstone.
Preceding t h e ceremony,
which is expected to bring
hundreds of prominent Jewish
leaders from all over the state,
will be a luncheon-meeting at
the Allenel Hotel, of the Michi-
gan Hillel Corporation, which
has directed and financed this
project from its very inception.
The officers of the corporation
are Osias Zwerdling of Ann Ar-
bor, president; Irwin I. Cohn,
vice-president; Louis Schostak,
secretary; and Herman Osnos.
treasurer. The latter are all of
Detroit.
Members of the Board from
Detroit are : Louis Berry, Aaron
Droock, Sidney Karbel, Abe
Kasle, Mrs. Charles Solovich,
Henry Wineman and Harry
Yudkoff.
Other members of the corpor-

Rapids, Louis Glick of Jack-
son, H. 0. Schlager of Ann Ar-
bor and Ypsilanti, William Pre-
sent of Lansing and John Mer-
dler of Saginaw.
The ceremony, which will take
place the day after the univer-
sity commencement, is open to
the public.
