Six Months' Sabbatical Leave
Honors Isaacs; Hebrew Schools
Re-Elect Kasle as President

Spokesmen for the Zionist
movement, the educational cir-
cles, the Allied Jewish Campaign
and the Jewish Welfare Federa=
tion and numerous other com-
munity movements joined in
honoring Bernard Isaacs on the
eve of his departure for a six-
month stay in Israel with Mrs.
Isaacs, at the annual dinner of
the United Hebrew Schools at
-
the Adas Shalom synagogue.
Abe Kas16,
who was re-
elected pr esi-
dent of the
schools, an-
nounced that
Mr. Isaacs was
voted a six
months' sabba-
tical leave to re-
side and study
•Abe Kasle in Israel.
Mr. Kasle presented Mr. Isaacs
with a purse in behalf of a num-
ber of his friends.
Dr. A. M. Hershman, guest
speaker, and others who paid
honor to Mr. Isaacs, recalled his
contributions to Jewish learning
and his activities as superinten-
dent of the schools.
Rabbi Hershman, in a wol-
ing address, honored Mr.

Isaacs for his devoted efforts
in behalf of education. He de-
clared that the synagogue and
the school are the two main-
stays of Jewish life and that
without Hebrew, Jewish com-
munities in the past have per-
ished. Recalling that he first
.met Mr. Isaacs at meetings of
Mefitazis Sfat Ivrith in New
York in 1904, Dr. Hershman
. pointed out that Mr. Isaacs
then w a s an engineer (he
is a graduate of Cooper
Union) and expressed the view
that he still is practicing en-
gineering—by building an edu-
cational fortress, the most
valuable of military fortifica-
tions in support of Jewish life.
Harry Cohen was chairman of
the dinner and Mrs. J. H. Ehr-
lich was toastmaster.

program was the appearance
of Mrs. Morris Schaver in mu-
sical selections. Mrs. Schaver,
, as the youngster Emma Laza-
roff, appeared in stellar roles
in the Hebrew operettas which
were written and directed by
Mr. Isaacs 30 years ago and •
were staged before overflow
audiences in Orchestra Hall.
A thrilling portion of • Mrs.
Schaver's program, in which
,r she was accompanied by Re-
becca Frohman, was her ren-
dition of the song she sang in
"Samson and Delilah," one of
Mr. Isaac's operettas. She used
the original sheet of music
composed by the late Cantor
Abraham Minkovsky.
