Jewish Mayors in Michigan

Moses Blurnrosen of Manistique

Moses Blumrosen was born in
Poland in 1861 and came to De-
troit in 1869. At an early age he
worked in Detroit and in the
lumbering towns throughout
Michigan. He , then moved to
Manistique where he was suc-
cessful in his business enter-
prises and was
highly regarded
as a ctiizen. He
was the owner
of the largest
department
store in Manis-
tique, served as
president of the
First National....
Bank, was a
member of the
School Board, Blumrosen
and from April 6, 1903, to April
7, 1904, served at Mayor of Man-
istique. Fraternally, he was a
Free Mason, Oddfellow, Elk and
Knight of Pythias.
In 1888, Mr. Blumrosen mar-
ried Jennie Rosenthal of Petos-
key. For many years theirs was
the only Jewish family in town.
Later, when a few others came,
Mr. Blumrosen organized a con-
gregation which met on the

High Holy Days and .which ser-
ved the Jewish families for
many miles around. Mrs. Blum-
rosen conducted Sabbath classes
for the Jewish children of Man-
istique in her home.
Though living in Manistique,
Mr. Blumrosen was a member of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek of
Detroit. In 1905, he moved to
Detroit and was active in Shaar-
ey Zedek, serving as trustee and
being instrumental in the or-
ganization of the Young People's
Society of Shaarey Zedek. Mr.
Blumrosen was also a member
of the board of directors of the
United Jewish Charities. In 1910,
he and his family returned to
Manistique. He continued his in-
terest in Shaarey Zedek, how-
ever, and when the new syna-
gogue was built at Willis and
Brush, he headed a drive for
'funds in the Upper Peninsula.
Mr. and Mrs. Blumrosen were
the parents of Florence (Mrs.
William Friedman), Bertha (Mrs.
Saul Saulson), Joseph, Nathan-
iel, Ruth (Mrs. Morse Goldman),
Helen and Rita (Mrs. Ellis Fish-
er).
Mr. Blumrosen died in 1921
and was interred in 'Detroit in
the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery.

David Goldman Re-Elected
To Head Wayne Alumni

The chance for the develop-
ment of a crack all-Jewish bat-
tery for the Detroit Tigers has
been shattered by an unexpected
trading deal. The Tigers have
exchanged husky right-handed
pitcher , Saul Rogovin for Bob
Cain, a left-handed hurler, of
the Chicago White Sox.
Rogovin was an outstanding
attraction for Jewish sports fans
during his stint with Detroit,
because on occasions he teamed
up with the outstanding rookie
catcher, Joe Ginsberg. Many
were looking forward to this
combination blossoming into one
of the star pitcher-catcher duos
in the big leagues. Before join-
ing the White Sox, Rogovin had
a 1-1 record.
So what might have been a
close association pow turns into
a rivalry. When Rogovin hurls
for Chicago against his o 1 d
teammates, s chances are that
Ginsberg will be behind the
plate calling the signals for Rog-
ovin's opposing pitcher.
Cal Abrams, valuable left-
fielder of the Brooklyn Dodgers,
has gone back into action after
resting up from a leg injury. As
of this writing he's leading both
leagues with a batting average
of .431.
Al Rosen of Cleveland climbed
into a first-place tie in the
American league runs-batted-in
division with 27 to his name to
match an equal number by Rob-'
inson of the White Sox.
