maid laurels as members of the
Women's Swimming Association
of New York City.
Barbara and Judy Klein and
Carol and Susan Edelstein have
emerged victorious in a num-
ber of recent high school swim
contests. The Klein girls marked
their 17th birthdays this week
while the Edelstein mermaids
are 14.

Tabling Trouble
Unfortunately it cannot be said that American Jewry has
made a united and effective effort at enlightening public opinion
to the dangers of German rearmament. Isidore Lipschutz has
been vilified by Pegler. None of our defense agencies backed him
up. At the last convention of the American Jewish Committee,
Abraham N. Geller introduced a resolution protesting against
German rearmament. The resolution was tabled. The Committee
was not prepared to oppose the policy of the State Department.
There was a time when the Schiffs and Marshalls publicly fought
against what they considered unjust or undesirable policies of
our government. They had the proper concept about the right of
citizens to criticize the government. They were not ghetto-Jews.
One man, James P. Warburg, has done a more valiant job in
constantly warning against rearming Germany than the American
Jewish Committee. What is still worse: the Committee is intensi-
fying hysteria in our country. Obviously they think that the best
method the Jew has to protect himself is to identify himself with
the most chauvinistic forces. They are rendering a disservice to
the cause of the Jew, democracy and peace.

A Forgotten Lesson .
The experiences of the Jews in Europe proves this point, Dr.
Neuman's Associktion of "National German Jews" was more hyper-
patriotic than the American Council for Judaism. They tried to
blame the East European Jews for anti-Semitism. They went
down with the rest. The same event took place in Italy.
Let us remember: The Jew is the first and worst victim of the
hysteria which some of us help foster. We are partly to be blamed
that, only six years after the defeat of Nazi Germany, Fascists
throughout the world once more rally to the cry Heil Hitler. World
Fascism is indeed once more on the march.
Democracy cannot win its fight if it invites fascist forces into
its ranks. Fascism, in all its disguises and manifestations, can
never be the servant or aenuine ally of democracy but only a
powerful fifth column and a most dangerous enemy as soon as it
gathers new strength. We must arouse the public to an aware-
ness of this danger.

Nazis on the March
An International Fascist Congress was held in Malmoe, Swed-
en. A considerable number of countries were represented. The
Congress was called by Per Engdahl, a Swedish Nazi. The attend
ance would have been much larger if the Swedish government
would not have refused many visas. The conclave decided to con-
duct a worldwide campaign and it openly proclaimed as one of
its aims the creation of a European empire. The new slogan is:
"Fascists of all countries unite!"
The Manchester Guardian terms the very strong showing
made by the Neonazis in the recent elections in Lower Saxony
"at once the most serious and significant political event in post-
war Germany."
We are now observing only the first disastrous consequences
of the U.S. policy regarding Germany. The U.S. is aiming at
German rearmament. For this reason it is complacent toward
the return of Nazis to positions of influence and is prematurely
restoring Germany's independence.
