Bnai Brith Lodge Destroyed
By Hitler Lives Again in U.S.
PHILADELPHIA. — A Bnai
Brith lodge that was liquidated
in Germany by the Nazis has
come to life again—and with the
same members!
This time it is located in Phil-
adelphia, and every one of its
present charter members belong-
ed to it when it functioned in
Breslau, Germany, before Hitler
came to power. This is believed
to be the first time in Bnai
Brith's 107 years of history that
one of its lodges was reborn in
this country after having been
destroyed abroad.
In Breslau, the lodge, named
for the great Jewish historian,
Heinrich Graetz, functioned for
many years as an influencial
agency in the Jewish communi-
ty. After Hitler ordered the liq_
uidation of Bnai Brith through-
out Germany, where there were
14,000 Bnai Brith members in
1933, Heinrich Graetz Lodge dis-
solved, • and during the war its
members were widely scattered.
Many of the survivors, however,
settled in Philadelphia, where
they resolved to re-form their
lodge. They took their old name,
Heinrich Graetz Lodge.
The first president of the new
Heinrich Graetz Lodge is William
Graetz, a relative of the Jewish
historian.

a second time.
NEW YORK (AJP) — Failure
of the "Goldbergs" to draw a
new audience was cited as a
factor in the General Foods
Corp. decision to drop sponsor-
ship of a television version of
the famed Jewish radio family.
The "family" will continue on
radio.
The program's sponsor, Gen-
eral Food Corp., disclosed that
it would not nenew its contract
with CBS for the "Goldberg" TV
program when the show goes off
the air for the summer on June
18. The program was on radio
for nearly a decade before its
televised career began on March
28, 1949.
United campaigning has proved
that it can attract top leader-
ship, raise more money for the
agencies than they could on
their own, and that agencies do
not lose their identity by join-
ing with others, H. J. Heinz II,
national chairman of the United
Red Feather Campaigns, told the
annual meeting of the United
Health and Welfare Fund which
launched the fourth campaign
of the organization.
Directors of the fund re-
elected Dr. Warren B. Cooksey
of Detroit president. Edward G.
Hacker of Lansing was named
a vice-president and chairman
of the Executive and Adminis-
trative Committees.

William Hellman will show
watercolors of Detroit scenes at
his home, 3078 Ewald Circle,
this Sunday, from 2 to 6 p.m.
and Monday from 7 to 10 p. in.
This showing ties in appropri-
ately with Detroit's 250th birth-
day celebration as his subject
matter includes Detroit streets,
old buildings and picturesque
mansions.
Some watercolors are more
successful than others and these
come off with spontaneity, good
color, pattern and pictorial
quality such as "The Lamed
Street Scene," "Buildings on St.
Antoine" and a group of build-
ings on John R.
Hellman finds Detroit elegant
and romantic. Old Detroiters will
enjoy these pictures.
