Jewish Book Council
Awards Literary Prizes

NEW YORK, (JTA)—The Har-
ry Kovner poetry awards, given
annually by the Jewish Book
Council of America for works of
poetry in English, Yiddish and
Hebrew, were presented to Ju-
dah Stampfer for his book of
English poetry, "Jerusalem Has
Many Faces," to Ber Lappin for
his volume of Yiddish poems,
"Der Fuller Krug," and to Aaron
Zeitlin, for his "Sherim U' Peo-
mot," in Hebrew.
The Council awarded the Sam-
uel H. Daroff prize for fiction to
Soma Morgenstern f o r "The
Testament of the Lost Son."
The Council presented a testi-
monial to Dr. Joshua Bloc, chief
of the Jewish Division of the
New York Public Library, for his
unique contributions to Jewish
literature and support of the
Council.

Poor Health Forces
Weinberg's Resignation
From Defense Post

WASHINGTON (JTA)---Sidney
J. Weinberg, New York invest-
ment banker, resigned as spe-
cial assistant to Defense Mobil-
izer Charles E. Wilson. Mr.
Wilson paid tribute to his serv-
ices and said he had "worked
so intensely as to prejudice his
health." Mr. Weinberg was in a
New York hospital when his
resignation was announced.
"The mobilization effort owes
much to Sidney Weinberg," Mr.
Wilson said. "Without his aid,
the defense mobilization would
not be so far advanced as it is."

Former Detroiter,
Dr. Helper, Dies

Dr. Morton Helper, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Samuel Helper, of
18985 Prairie, died May 10 after
a long illness in University Hos-
pital, Columbus, 0. Dr. Helper
was a resident of Evansville,
Ind., and was 39 years old.
A graduate of the University
of Michigan and the U. of M.
Medical School, Dr. Helper in-
terned at Harper Hospital in
Detroit, and serveu his residency
at University Hospital in Ann
Arbor.
He set up his practice in
Evansville in 1941 and was ap-
pointed radiologist at St. Mary's
hospital there. From 1942 to 1946
he served as a major in the U. S.
Army Medical Corps where he
took part in the Philippine in-
vasion and worked in a hospital
in Japan.
He was born in Bay City,
Mich. Dr. Helper was a member
of Washington Ave. Temple and
Bnai Brith in Evansville, and
was associated with several
medical associations.
Services were at Ira Kaufman
Chapel and burial was in Clover
Hill Park Cemetery. Besides his
parents he is survived by his
wife, Ann; daughter, Ellen Les-
lie; son, Gordon; and brothers,
Irving, Harold and Ralph.

Ild`se Lerman Dies
In Auto Accident

Services for Rose Lerman, who
died suddenly in an automobile
accident on May 8 were held at
Lewis Brothers. She was only 29-
years-old. Interment was in
Clover Hill Park Cemetery, with
Rabbis Hoberman and Wohlgel-
ernter and Cantor Adler offi-
ciating.
Mrs. Lerman, who lived at
127f5 Broadstreet, is survived by
her husband, Dr. Simon Lerner;
daughter, Sandra Jean; son,
Lawrence Michael; parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Norman Fill; 2ind
brothers, Dr. Leon and Albert
Fill.
On the way home from visit-
ing her mother in Ann Arbor
Hospital on May 8, Mrs. Lerman
lost control of the car she was
driving and it left the Willow
Run Expressway. A sister-in-
law, Mrs. Anna Maltz, a passen-
ger, suffered only minor in-
juries.
Mrs. Lerman was an active
worker in the Maimonides Medi-
cal Society Auxiliary, past presi-
dent of. the Pythian Sisters, the
treasurer of Cong. Mogen Ab7ct-
ham Sisterhood and president of
the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
PTA.
The Beth Yehudah Schools are
creating a memorial fund for a
project, yet to be named, in her
honor.

Mrs. Celia Keys, 88, Dies
Of Heart Attack May 12

The Jewish community is
mourning this week the passing
of a member of one of the first
Jewish families to `come to De-
troit from Austria.
Mrs. Celia (Schussel) Keys
died from a heart attack at the
Florence Crittenton Hospital
Saturday at 88. She entered the
hospital May 7. Services were
held Sunday at the Ira Kauf-
man Funeral Home, Rabbi Jos-
eph Thumim officiating.
Mrs. Keys came to Detroit 60
years ago. Rabbi Thumim recall-
ed that the first religious serv-
ices of Cong. Beth Abraham
were held in Mrs. Keys' home.
Surviving Mrs. Keys are two
sons, Hyman and Marvin; and
three daughters, Mrs. David A.
Levine, Mrs. Louis Weingarden
and Mrs. Henry Applebaum. She
also leaves 11 grandchildren
and 6 great grandchildren.
