Wisconsin U. Calls Off Ban on Lerner; Oust Instigator from Committee MADISON, Wis., (AJP)—Crit- ics opposed to the appearance of Jewish columnist Max Lerner at a University of Wisconsin stu- dent-sponsored meeting on grounds of unproven pro-Com- munist leanings were severely rapped this week by the Wiscon- sin faculty and the ban lifted. Lerner was scheduled to ad- dress the students, under the. auspices of the University's Knapp Foundation, Sunday eve- ning. Unsubstantiated charges two weeks ago by a faculty commit- tee that Lerner allegedly had past Communist affiliations were met by a firm denial from Lerner and a challenge that the group document its assertion. Student leaders, including the president of the undergraduate body, immediately protested the ban and announced they would sponsor Lerner's appearance on their own. On the eve of the columnist's THE JEWISH NEWS Friday, May 18, 1951 - 3 appearance here the faculty passed a resolution expressing "regret" for any reflections on the reputation of Max Lerner which may have arisen" as a result of the ban. The faculty assured "the stu- dent body and the public that it is concerned today no less than in the past in upholding freedom of discussion as the mark of a true university and the tradi- tional pride of the University of Wisconsin."
