Allied Jewish Campaign Gains
Ground; Nears $3,500,000 Mark

Report Meeting Today;
Certain to Exceed '50 Sum

The Allied Jewish Campaign
has gained ground in the last
week and present trends indi-
cate that the amount raised in
1950 will be exceeded in a short
time.
Abe Kasle, campaign chair-
man, reported at a meeting of
workers Tuesday that 80 per
cent of last year's amount al-
ready has been attained, that
the $3,500,000 is about to be
reached and that coverage of
outstanding slips will assure the
drive's success.

A campaign report meeting
will:be held today, at 12:15, at
a luncheon in the Italian Gar-

dens Room of the Book-Cadil-
lac Hotel. Mr. Kasle an-
nounces that the film, "This
Very Moment," highlighting
local Jewish social service pro-
grams, will be a special fea-
ture of the meeting.

At Tuesday's report meeting
at the Woodward Center, me-
chanical trades leaders chal-
lenged other trade and profes-
sional divisions to capture the
lead.
Among the top workers cited
for outstanding work were Sol
Eisenberg and Nathan Kolb.

Democracy on the March: Prophecy Come True
Dr. Carl Hermann Voss had some interesting things to tell

Detroit Zionists last week on his visit here in behalf of the Israel
bond drive. He had just returned from Israel and was witness to
democracy's march on the road to triumph. in the Middle East,
thanks to the efforts of Jews who are rebuilding their lives and
their land. These are established facts. They merely recapitulate
the known factors in the great romance of Israel. His commentary
is the enlightening element in the story told by this eminent Chris-
tian Zionist.
In the early days of his efforts in support of a Jewish Pales-
tine, Dr. Voss, while receiving commendations for his work, was
admonished by sincere Christians: "There is no possibility of this
ever coming true . . . This is a lost cause " That was in 1944, in
1945, in 1946—even as late as 1948.
-
Since then, prophecy has come true. Augury has become reali-
ty. For men like Dr. Voss it is a great satisfaction, After all, many
people who were in the very thick of the battle for a Jewish Pales-
tine—now, fortunately, Israel—were in doubt. Only Theodor Herzl
(Dr. Voss reminded his Detroit audience that Herzl's birthday was
on May 1) envisioned fulfillment of prophecy when he predicted
that 50 years after he had written "The JewiSh State" there would
be a Jewish state.

But there were others. This is where Dr. Voss comes in again.
There was Inez (Mrs. Walter Clay) Lowdermilk who said time
and time again that she never doubted.
Dr. Voss told the Mrs. Lowdermilk story:
She prayed every night for the fulfillment
of the Zionist ideal; as a devout Chris-
tian she had faith; she refused to disbe-
lieve. Only once did she doubt: at a din-
ner at which she was seated next to Mrs.
Ernest Bevin. Her distinguished neighbor,
quoting her husband, said that only over
the dead body of the then British For-
eign Secretary would Jews enter Palestine.
Mrs. Lowdermilk left the dinner without
tasting a bite, went to her room, "wrest-
led with the Lord,', admonished the Al-
. mighty, "how can you do this to your
people," awl—here Dr. Voss again quoted
Mrs. Lowdermilk: "It helped, for, as you
see He relented."

Between You and Me

-

This is one of the grand stories about
grand people—and we are quoting a great Mrs., Lowdermilk
woman who affirms, "I never gave up." It is because such people do
not give up that there is an Israel.
These people have faith in Israel's future; therefore they are
asking their friends—All Americans—to buy Israel bonds. •
It is an interesting development. New faith is being instilled
in the Jewish state. In addition to the free UJA dollars, people are
making investments in Israel, through the bond drive. Romance

Zionist Issues

American non-Zionists interested in Israel are beginning to
ask questions about the composition of- the Jewish Agency . .
Officially the Jewish Agency should be composed of Zionists and
non-Zionists on an equal basis . . Actually, the Jewish Agency
executive is composed today only of Zionists. . . . In fact, the
Jewish Agency executive is now the same as the executive of the
World Zionist Organization , . Zionist leaderS who now demand
a charter from the Israeli Government for the World Zionist Or-
ganization also want to retain the Jewish Agency for a number of
reasons . . . They recommend that the name "Jewish Agency" be
retained for fund-raising reasons as well as because of legal fac-
tors involved . . . The legal status of the Jewish Agency is not
clear at the moment . . . The Agency was never incorporated
under the laws of any country . It came into being under the
terms of the Mandate for Palestine given to Britain by the League
of Nations . . . The Mandate ceased to exist with the establish-
ment of the State of Israel, bUt the Israeli Government has sO
far not given the Agency juridical status .. . A basic assumption
is that the Government of Israel wishes to see the Jewish Agency
function . . . But Zionist leaders insist that the Jewish Agency
be wholly under the control of the World Zionist Organization
and that the World Zionist executive be vested with full authority
over the Agency . . Leaders of all American Zionist groups have
decided to recommend that the governing body of the Jewish
Agency should be nominated, or otherwise designated, by the
World Zionist Organization . Non-Zionist leaders in the United
States are, therefore, attempting to clarify the position of the
non-Zionists should their formal partnership in the Agency be
annulled by the Zionists . . Such clarification is all the more
important to them in view of the Zionist request for a monopoly-
in Israel over all aid coming from Jews in other countries.
