'Border Street,' Based on 'The Wall,'
Comes to Cinema Theater on Friday

A tremendous amount of re-
search work went into the mak-
ing of "Border Street" — the
great film based on John Her-
sey's "The Wall"—the story of
the Warsaw Ghetto uprising
that comes to the Cinema Fri-
day.
(See Commentator's Column
on Page 2)
"Every incident is based on an
actual happening," according to
Alexander Ford, director of the
film. "We sought out every re-
liable source of information we
could find," he recalled.
"We examined documents on
the fighting, dug up from the
debris in the ghetto, and noW
housed in the Museum of the
Warsaw Ghetto. We studied
many photoeraphs- which the
methodical Nazis took during
the fighting and duplicated a
number of scenes as well as in-
cidents in 'Border Street.'
'We questioned scores of sur-
vivors of the ghetto uprising
about their experiences.
"There was a well organized
group outside the walls who
smuggled arms and food into
the ghetto. 'Border Street' shows
how this was done—particularly

how the children were used for
this task."
When Quentin Reynolds, who
has done a foreword for "Border
Street," first saw the film, he
exclaimed, "This is "The Wall"
in motion pictures.
The film won the highest
award at the Venice Interna-
tional Film Festival in 1948.

NEW YORK (AJP)—The lung-
tic fringe press was off this
, week on a hysterical campaign
holding "the invisible govern-
ment," otherwise known as "the
Marxist-Zionist clique" respon-
sible for the dismissal of Gen.
MacArthur.
The current issue of "Common
Sense," Conde McGinley's New
Jersey hate sheet, was devoted
entirely to that theme.
"General Douglas MacArthur,
the greatest American geners.1
since George Washington, has
been fired by Truman, i.e. the
Rosenberg, Marshall, Frankfurt-
er, L e h m a n, and Acheson
crowd," the lead story said.
Spread across the page were
photos of 'T.erbert Lehman, Ber-
nard Baruch, Henry Morgen-
thau, Felix Frankfurter, Anna
Rosenberg, and David K. Niles,
advisor to President Truman on
Jewish matters.
All of them, with McGinley's
usual disinterest in fact, were
labeled "Zionist," though none
of them are enrolled Zionists.

LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA) — The
issue whether Israel has sov-
ereignty in the demilitarized
zones on the Israel-Syrian fron-
tier was placed before the Se-
curity Council when Israel Am-
bassador Abba Eban insisted on
Israel's full sovereignty in the
zones, except for military as-
pects, and Maj. Gen. William E.
Riley, UN Truce Chief, asked
the Council to clarify the point.
In a fighting, one-hour
speech, Eban told the Council
that Syria was attempting to
carry out a preconceived plan
to grab Israeli territory and
warned: "The same tenacity we
showed in defending our deserts
we will show again in defending
our swamps," he warned.
Eban defended Israel's right
to drain the Huleh swamps. He
pointed out that the Huleh re-
clamation project is an integral
part of Israel's development be-
cause of its importance as a
source of irrigation for the arid
regions of the Jewish state.
Gen. Riley, who followed Mr.
Eban with a statement to the
Council, declared that the ma-
chinery of the Mixed Armistice
Commission was "entirely ade-
quate" to deal with the current
dispute and expressed his regret
to the Council that it had been
brought into the case. He asked
the Council, since the case had
come before it, for clarification
and guidance on "the trouble-
some question of administrative
authority in the demilitarized
zone."
Gen. Riley defended the posi-
tion he had taken in the memor-
andum attacked by Israel — a
memorandum that had ordered
Israel to cease its work on the
Huleh drainage project — by
quoting Dr. Bunche. - He said
that Dr. Bunche had authorized
him to make a statement which
included the following, quoted
from Dr. Bunche: "It was recog-
nized that the gradual restora-
tion of normal civilian life in
the demilitarized zone could
neither be automatic nor left to
the discretion of the conflicting
parties. It was provided, -there-
fore, that the chairman of the
Mixed Armistice Commission
-should be the responsible agent
for guiding this process."
