Campaign Lags; Must
Reach 20,000 for Goal

Stirring Plea Made
By Golda Myerson .

„„

of Jewish Events

An appeal was issued to the entire
community to make every effort to
regain lost ground and to cover the
field by contacting those who have
not yet contributed.
Louis Berry, who called for reports
at the luncheon, stated that as of
Sunday afternoon 7,000 people pledged
$2,822,829. He added that in 1950 27,-
000 people had contributed to the
Allied Jewish Campaign and that
20,000 people must be reached to
assure success for the effort to
rescue of hundreds of thousands
of Jews through the UJA and to sup-
port local and national causes.
The sum of $2,822,829 represents
61% of the total contributed in 1950.
Mrs. Myerson, in a stirring address,
asserted that "we are making rapid
strides towards that glorious da y
when we'll be able to meet. together
without talking about monetary gifts."
But she added emphatically that im-
migration must go on, that no one
will be kept out of Israel, that there
is a MUST immigration of 60,000 who
are to be admitted during the next
three years, and declared:
"We have always asked for
money. We asked for relief for the
massacred, for the dead, for the
bleeding—with no hope except to
see the wounds reopened repeatedly:
We were powerless. But this—what
we are doing today in Israel — is
different. This is the first time that
Jews are privileged to fight as free
people. We may have a war. We may
suffer losses, but we will fight in
dignity, we won't be massacred, we
won't hide in attics, we'll fight as
free human beings."
Mrs. Myerson, speaking earlier on
Sunday at the State Fair Grounds
Horticultural Building to 2,000 women
who participated in the G-Day'solici-
tations, admonished them not to ask
for charity, because Israel is function-
ing as a dignified state.
