Exit Yiddish Press: Decline of Language

Suspension. of publication of the Jewish Morning Journal, the
only surviving Yiddish orthodox daily newspaper, adds a sad note
to the status of the Yiddish language, Yiddish journalism and the
foreign language press in general in this country.
Until the 1920s, there were numerous daily Yiddish newspapers
in America. For a short time, Detroit had a daily paper for the
Yiddish readers. Cleveland, Chicago and Philadelphia were served
by daily Yiddish papers, in addition to thoSe in New York.
Today, not a single Yiddish paper is published outside of New
York. There is a daily Yiddish newspaper in Canada and there
are several in Latin American countries. But in this country only
The Day, The Forward and The Freiheit remain. The Tageblatt
and the Morning Journal are no more. The old Wahrheit and
Zeit are gone.
The Day is a Zionist, pro-Democratic newspaper. The For-
ward, formerly ,Socialist, is now a New Deal publication and is pro-
Zionist. The Freiheit is Communist and as such is rapidly losing
its limited following.
The only secure Yiddish daily is the Forward, whose large
reserve funds and its sponsorship of a radio station—established
in tribute to the memory of Eugene V. Debs—provide it with
means to guarantee a long existence.
Even in the instance of the Forward there are questions relat-
ing to security. It is rumored that its western office, in Chicago,
whence comes the Detroit edition, may be abandoned soon. There
also are reports that the Forward may be converted into a daily
English-Jewish newspaper. If this is true, it is an indication of
insecurity.
The new trend is ascribable to the decline in the use of
Yiddish, the rapid reduction in the number of people who
either speak Yiddish or read the language.
It is a regrettable condition. Great classics have been writ-
ten in Yiddish. The Yiddish press, in its day , made great con-
tributions to Jewish life and culture, to Americanism and the
advancement of the highest democratic ideals.
But we are dealing with realities and we must recognize
the decline not only of the Yiddish press but of the entire for-
eign language press. The immigration restrictions have kept
from these shores the elements which previously had provided
the reader elements for the foreign language press. Now, the
second and third generation Americans no longer adhere to
the background of their parents and are strictly English readers.
This applies to Jews and to the sons and daughters of all
immigrants. English is their language, and where tradition
beckons in Jewish ranks it is Hebrew—the language of the Bible
and the Prophets—that is assuming a new role of importance and
not Yiddish.
The new trend is evident in the Yiddish schools which are
losing ground. It is observable in the Yiddish theater which is
now secondary or tertiary in influence to everything else in Jewish
life. It is unmistakable on all fronts.
The Jewish Morning Journal may receive a new lease on life
through an interested purchaser. It is doubtful, however, whether
there will be a charge in the status of Yiddish whose position
undoubtedly will continue to decline.
The entire foreign language press is affected by the suspension
of immigration. An important Americanization instrument thus
is disappearing from the scene. But the very fact that there are
fewer people to Americanize accounts for the new trend and for
the natural emphasis now being placed on English as the language
of all Americans.
Thus, in Jewish ranks, it is the English-Jewish press that now
serves as the organ of our communities. To create a wholesome
spirit in American Jewry, this press must be given the encourage-
ment that is due it.

Israel Philharmonic
Concert Here Netted
Profit of $2,666.38

Detroit's response to the Israel
Philharmonic proved a financial
as well as cultural success, ac-
cording to a review of the sym-
phony's tour released by the
American Fund for Israel Insti-
tutions, which sponsored the
tour.
Arrangements forAthe concert,
held here Feb. 4, were handled by
Max Osnos, chairman of a spec-
ial committee. • He was assisted
by Jack Kellman and Philip R.
Marcuse.
The Jewish •W,,lfare Pedera-
tion—of which the American
Fund is a beneficiary agency—
granted $7,500 to meet expenses
of the orchestra and of the cont
cert.
Because of the efficient opera-
tion of the concert committee,
the Federation was able to turn
over to the American Fund an
additional sum of $2,666.38, to
further the works of the orch-
estra, a net profit on ,the Phil-
harmonic's appearance in De-
troit.
Both items allocated to the
American Fund by the Federa-
tion are in addition to the grant
of $15,600 from 1950 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign funds. Along with
aiding the Philharmonic, the
American Fund is American
Jewry's for supporting 92 other
cultural agencies in Israel.

The closing down of the Training Bureau for Jewish Com-
munal Service does not reflect too much glory on the Jewish com-
munities of America. . . . The school was organized four years ago
in response to a need expressed by many national agencies, as
well as local federations and welfare funds, for a school that
could give a better Jewish background to workers in the field : of
communal service. With an approximate budget of $100,000 a
year, it was to be financed equally by a group of national agencies
and by local funds and federations. George Rabinoff, a former
associate director of the Council of Jewish Federations and 'Wel-
fare Funds and a high UNRRA official, was chosen to head 'Ole
Bureau. He is one of the top Jewish experts in the field of Jewish
communal service and was the logical choice for the post ... But
the Training Bureau was faced by strangulation from two areas.
Not enough communities and national agencies had the foresight
to realize that it was imperative to send young people to the
school on a subsidy basis for advanced training in Jewish com-
munal work. The financial squeeze started about a year ago when
the national agencies began cutting down their appropriations to
the Bureau. The UJA eliminated an appropriation of about
$110,000 and, despite repeated protests to Montor, the UJA board
refused to consider this comparatively small appropriation. This
and the fact that other national agencies and local communities
had cut their appropriations has forced the -Bureau into its pres-
ent status.

Balaam's Ass

William Zuckerman, who has long been braying at every
positive value in Jewish life, has finally achieved the dubious dis-
tinction of becoming Balaam's ass to the chaiioteers of anti-
Semitism. Riding the ass for all it is worth, the anti-Semitic
filth sheet Common Sense recently carried a front-page story by
Zuckerman which it advertised as meaning that "those who criti-
cize instead of admire Jewish power are anti-Semites," thus
boldly bolstering its anti-Jewish case with Zuckerman's immun-
ity salve . . • On the very page that the hate sheet used Zucker-
man's story as a fig leaf to cover its venom against all Jews, even
of the Zuckerman ilk, there appeared a picture of Cardinal Mind-
zenty with an explanation why and by whom he was imprisoned.
Naturally all the Catholics and. Protestants in Hungary are ab-
solved: Only the Marxist-Zionist-Communist mi --.ority has been
responsible for the imposition of a red regime on Hungary and
that minority will yet foist Communism on this country "if we
Christians allow them." And, of course, Communism is only a
front for Yiddish Zionists who rule Russia, most of Eastern Eu-
rope and Manchuria and China too. Like the Judaistic fathers
who recently wept at their Chicago conference at the preferen-
tial treatment accorded by Washington to Israel and at the mis-
treatment of Arabs at the hands of Israel, Common Sense weeps
at Jewish destruction of Christian sepulchres and churches in
Jerusalem and goes into hysterical songs of praise for the impec-
cable Arabs who' made sure their bullets would not hit holy
Christian walls. Has Common Sense found sustenance and fodder
for its anti-Semitism in Zuckerman's article and is that the rea-
son why it featured it in one of its most vicious anti-Jewish out-
bursts?
. Just as I was about to ponder this question, Zuckerman
arrived in my office with a complaint that the story about his
article in the hate sheet was "outrageously incorrect and shock-
ingly unfair" to him. He said he never permitted Common Sense
to use the article, which he syndicated in his Jewish Newsletter,
that the entire affair was a shocking act of journalistic piracy
and that he would take legal action against Common Sense. All
this is true as far as the record goes. In fact, had he actually
contributed the article to the hate journal he would only have
been guilty of compounding the idiocy of its original authorship.
He complained the story has done him irreparable damage but he
is little concerned about the irreparable damage his outbursts
have been causing. The mere fact that one of the most vicious
anti-Semitic papers in the country could use his article as a prop
for its anti-Jewish outbursts surely stamps this man, who would
play a role in Jewish journalism, as a menace to the fabric and
structuro ► of our Jewish community. s
