r. Carl H. Voss Opens
ZOD Bond Drive May 3;
Just Back from Israel
Dr. Carl H. Voss, eminent Christian clergyman and orator,
who returned this week from a tour of Israel as the head of a
Christian delegation to the Jewish state, will officially open the
Israel bond drive to be conducted by the
members of the Zionist Organization of
Detroit, Thursday evening, May 3, at
Temple Israel.
A portion of the meeting will be devoted
to annual reports and to election of offi-
cers, under the chairmanship of A. C. Lap-
pin, president of the ZOD.
Morris Jacobs, chairman of the ZOD
bond drive, will be in charge of planning
fOr the bond drive and for mobilization of
forces which will strive to fulfill the quota
of $3,000,000 in bond sales undertaken by
the Detroit General Zionists.
Dr. Voss, who was the director of the
American Christian Palestine Committee
during the crucial years when Palestine
JeWry was fighting for security and for
freedom,
is one of the outstanding Christ-
Dr. Carl H. Voss
ian exponents of the Zionist cause.
All Detroit Jews are invited to hear the eminent guest speak-
er at the important May 3 rally at Temple Israel.
Mr. Jacobs, urging all who are interested in Israel's future
to attend next Thursday's meeting, stated that the importance
of Dr. Voss' first-hand report from Israel and the urgency of
the bond drive should assure an overflow audience at the
Zing rally.
LONDON—The closing of the last camp for displaced Jews in the British
zone of Germany and the ending of the Jewish DP problem in the zone will take
place within the next few months under an agreement arrived at between Joseph
Rosensaft, chairman of the General Committee of Liberated Jews, and the Brit-
ish Occupation Authorities, it was reported here Tuesday.
Many of the remaining Jews will emigrate during that period. The "hard-
core cases," numbering between 60 and 100, will be transferred to a hospital in
the American zone where they will be cared for by the Joint Distribution Commit-
tee. In the American zone it is estimated there are still between 12,000 and 15,000
displaced Jews.
Bulgarian Jewry's Conditions Worsening
ISTANBUL—Conditions of Jewish life in Bulgaria are worsening as a result of
the economic difficulties facing the country at large, and signs of anti-Semitism
again are noticeable, according to a private report received from H. Mofri, of
Sofia. The report adds that Bulgarian Jews are gradually losing their contacts
with Judaism under the impact of Communism.
There are now some 4,500 Jews in Bulgaria, most of them in Sofia, the re-
port says. With emigration at a standstill, those who remain are being absorbed
within the general masses it asserts.
The report states that the Jewish religion and tradition are tolerated and
many Jews attend Sabbath services in the synagogues. The Chief Rabb. remains
Dr. A. Hananel. Only one Jewish paper, "Evreesci Vesti," is still published and
it attacks Israel and American Jews in every issue, the report says.
Jews who formerly owned businesses now are employees in them and many
Jews face economic difficulties, according to the report.
