Were Death Penalties Too Severe?

Mixed Emotions Cloud Sentencing
Of Spies, as Rabbi Defends Verdict

NEW YORK, (AJP) — A lead-
ing American rabbi gave his full
support to the death sentences
for the atom spies Julius and
Ethel Rosenberg while the Jew-
ish Daily Forward called the
sentences "horrible" and
"cruel."
The sentences were handed
down by Fed-
-eral Judge Irv-
ing R. Kauf-
man after a
successful pro-
,..secution by U.S.
Attorney Irving
•Saypol, both of
whom attended
their synago-
Judge Kaufman gues for divine
guidance in the handling of
their official duties in the trial.
Reactions in both Jewish and
general circles were mounting
in the wake of the first death
sentences ever levied during
peace time for espionage for a
foreign power.

The Communist Daily Worker
'cited the judgment of the So-
cialist Forward with the com-
ment that "When a paper of
that reactionary character finds
itself compelled to speak in this
manner, even amid the prevail-
ing hysteria, that can only
mean that millions of Ameri-
cans, especially among the Jew-
ish -community, must feel the
same way."
The Communist propaganda
sheet also asserted that "what
Judge Kaufman is doing is to
use the alleged espionage of
two Jewish citizens to turn the
hatred of the families of 57,000
American casualties from the
war makers in Washington to-
ward 'Jews and Communists'."

Typical of the many public
expressions of reaction to the
death sentences were a pair
of opposing statements in a
New York daily, both from
non-Jews.

Warner Hilldred asserted that
Judge Kaufman had whipped
himself into "a state of utter
frenzy" and that the sentence
was justice with a 'vengeance'.
Hilldred said that the Rosen-
bergs deserved punishment "but
that imposed upon them is
worthy only of Nazis and Com-
munists."
B u t Dr. William Argento,
listed as a New York City psy-
chologist, described the judge
