The documents, found in two sealed milk cans, are in Yiddish, German and Polish and are es- timated to total 40 percent of the entire underground ghetto archives. Dr. Mirsky established that within a living animal cell, the genes—tiny bits of living matter that carry her- edity traits—are influenced by the living material surrounding them. The crux of Dr. Mirsky's the- ory, that the cell cytoplasm—the material outside the nucleus—in- fluences the amount of a special protein, called residual protein, attached to the DNA in the cell, was backed by recent experi- ments.
