THE JEWISH NEWS-35 UN Examines Israel's Charges Of Iraq's Maltreatment of Jews TEL AVIV, (JTA)—The United Nations Conciliation Commis- sion on Palestine will examine Israel char g s of maltreat- ment by Iraq authorities of Jews emigrating from Iraq, Ely E. Palmer, current chairman of the commission, announced. The American diplomat ac- • knowleged receipt of a com- plaint from Walter Eytan, Di- rector-General of the Israel Foreign Ministry, and said that the commission would examine this complaint at its next meet- ing April 23. Dr. Tewfik Rushti Aras, Turkish member of the commission, who recently visited Iraq to discuss. with the Iraq Government proposals for re- settlement in Iraq of Palestine refugees in exchange for Jews emigrating to Israel, will attend this session. Some 3,000 Jews are now in Iraqi prisons, awaiting trial on various charges, Prof. Ezra Had- dad, noted Hebrew scholar and teacher reported here today fol- lowing his arrival from Baghdad. He said that all the Jewish schools in Iraq had been closed. The scholar estimated that Jew- ish property valued at 100,000,- 000 pounds ($280,000,000) had been frozen by the Iraq author- ities thus far. The Alien Proper- ty Custodian, he said, had no- tified wealthy Jews now travel- ling abroad that unless they re- turn to Iraq within two months, their property would be frozen. Prof. Haddad declared that a total of 108,000 Jews had regis- tered for emigration to Israel. About 30,000 others, he said had elected to retain their Iraq cit- izenship. Most of these, he said, were wealthy persons who elect- ed to remaiff to protect their in- terests. The 'recent widespread hostility displayed by the Iraq authorities, however, he said, and the threat of further anti- Jewish leg, islation, had convinc- ed many of these people that it would be futile for them to re- main in Iraq. They now place all their hopes, he added, on being taken out of Iraq to Israel even at the cost of loss of their wealth. Iraqi newspapers reaching here predict the imminent proc- lamation of a new law empow- ering the MiniSter of Interior to expel "every undesirable Jew who endangers Iraq's security," it was reported here today. Bnai Brith to Sponsor Five Institutes on Jewish Leaders WASHINGTON, D. C. — The National Committee of Bnai Brith Institutes of Judaism, composed of leading Jewish edu- cators, announced that there would be at least five and pos- sibly nine Institutes of Judaism under Bnai Brith auspices throughout the country this year. Friday, April 20, 1951 Interior having such vast dis- cretionary powers are viewed in Jewish circles with the utmost concern.
