Zelig Tepper, a '73-year-old near-blind Jewish immigrant, en-
thusiastically shows one of the paintings in his exhibit of "Twenty
Primitive Paintings," which were shown at the Wellons Gallery
in New York far 12 days.. Critics hailed his work as a great con-
tribution to art." Tepper took up painting only two years ago,
mostly out.of boredom, and smilingly asserts painting has made'
him feel "truly useful once more."

NEW YORK, (AJP)--Because
101-year-old Philip Falkenstein,
dubbed "Europe's Oldest Jew,"
was devout and during the war
refused to eat meat because it
was not kosher, he should live
"for years more," his grandson
said.
The elder Falkenstein, who
was beaten by the Nazis when
he was 92, suffered three smash-
ed ribs, but refused to succumb,
celebrated his 100th natal day
in Berlin last week.
Two sons and a daughter, the
- remnants of what was once a
family of nine children, gather-
ed around their father at a
celebration in Berlin. Four of
the children had died of diph-
theria in a single day in 1888.
A fifth perished in World War
1. Mrs. Falkenstein passed on in
1932 and a daughter was mur-
dered by the Nazis shortly after-
wards.
Greeting their aged father on
his birthday were Oscar Fal-
kenstein, 67, of New York City,
and another son, Louis, 73, of
Zurich, Switzerland. Both had
fled the Reich in 1940. A daugh-
ter Hertha, who was thrown
into a concentration camp with
her father during the war, was
there, too.
Jack Falcon, the grandson, in
crediting his grandfather's long
life to maintaining kashruth,
said all living relatives would go
to - Berlin to celebrate a 105th
birthday.
