Zionists,
Morris Jacobs was elected
chairman of the drive, with Leon
Kay as co-chairman. Philip
Slomovitz, James I: Ellmann and
Ira Kaufman were named vice-
chairmen.
Dr. MOrton Robbins of Nashua,
N. H., nationally prominent ZOA
leader, in an address . to the
board analyzed the importance
of the bond drive. • He urged
that the Allied JeWish Campaign
should be speeded to success in
order that the bond drive should
be the success it must be turned
into in order to solidify Israel's
economy.
A. C. Lappin, ZOD president,
announced that June 3 has been
set4Ls annual Z-Day for the en-
roilinerit of Zionist members.
The following explanation has

fact that Israel has advanced to
the point where it can invite
investment on the same basis as
any other growing country or
any expanding busineSs con-
cern.
Unfortunately, philanthropic
contributions through the Unit-
ed Jewish Appeal are. entirely
inadequate to meet the growing
economic needs of Israel. At the
present time Israel must import
a minimum of $250,000,000 worth
of goods a year. Its annu'al ex-
ports total $50,000,000. This wide
gap • cannot possibly be bridged
by philanthropic dollars.
There is neither conflict nor
competition between the United
Jewish Appeal and the Govern-
ment of Israel Bond Issue. They
complement each other.
Contributions made to the
United Jewish Appeal are tax-
free and deductible on U. S. in-
come tax returns. The U. S.
allows deductions up to 15 per
cent of income for charitable
contributions. The Bond Issue,
on the other hand, invites in-
vestments. When you make a
contribution, you expect no re-
turn except the moral satisfac-
tion which you derive from gill-.
ing. When you buy bonds, ev-
ery cent you invest in the State
of Israel will be repaid with in-
terest. And, of course, you are
in both cases participating in a
great humanitarian endeavor.
A primary, reason_ that Israel
needs extensive financial aid
from America is the vast flow
of immigration to the Jewish
State. More than 520,000 imini-
grants have entered since the
State was proclaimed; an addi-
tional 600,000 are expected dur-
ing the next three years.

The session was addressed by
