New Immigration Wave
Perils Israel Economy;
UJA Ueeds $26 Million

NEW YORK - An urgent plea
to Edward M. M. Warburg, gen-
eral chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal, from immigra
13 n officials in Jerusalem,
led upon the UJA to provide
_ge-scale funds immediately
73 the transfer to Israel in the
next f our months of 100,000
Jews from Eastern European
and Moslem countries, 70,000 of
whom must be evacuated from
Iraq.
The decision to bring in 100,-
000 immigrants in the period
April through July was reached
by an Israel government and
Jewish Agency Immigration Co-
ordination committee, and was
brought about by the critical
situation in Iraq where Jews
must leave before May 31, by
order of the Iraq parliament.
The UJA General Chairman,
said that a minimum of $26,-
000,000 in cash is required at
once for this emergency phase
of the immigration and tem-
porary housing programs sup-
ported through UJA and does
not include other pressing needs
facing the organization.
Warburg said that $10,000,000
in cash must become available
in the shortest possible time for
the four-month movement to
Israel. of 100,000 Jews, and that
jan additional $16,000,000 is
needed for the emergency hous-
ing of these immigrants in 20,-
000 temporary shelters.

Israel Minister Tells
Of Parties' Opposition
To Israel Theocracy

NEW YORK (AJP)-Moshe
Shapiro, Israel cabinet officer
and religious Labor Zionist lead-
er, arrived in New York with
the latest defense against
charges that religious Jewry
seeks a theocratic Jewish state.
Shapiro, Israel's Minister of
Interior, Health and Immigra-
tion, said that all religious par-
ties were "strongly opposed" to
any theocratic tendencies in Is-
rael.
Shapiro is a leader of the re-
ligious bloc in the Knesset and
head of Hapoel Hamizrachi, the
leading party in the religious
bloc.
He is the first of several top
Israeli officials scheduled to
come to the United States to
take part in the 1951 United
Jewish Appeal campaign and
the $500,000,000 Israel bond
drive.

MONTREAL (JTA)-The. Jew-
ish population of Canada has
risen by 23,000 in the last three
years to a total of about 190,000.
The spurt in immigration of
Jews resulted from a liberaliza-

the Dominion, in line with a
policy of admitting numbers of
European DP's. The Canadian
Jewish Congress has spent some
$2,000,000 on the settlement of
war refugees in Canada since

Israel Repays $1 Million
Loan to Garment Workers

NEW YORK, (JTA)-The
Israel government has repaid
$1,000,000 to the International
Ladies Garment Workers Union
which advanced the sum to Is-
rael as a loan about a year ago,
it was announced by David Du-
binsky, president of the union.
The $1,000,000 was lent when
the Jewish state was in need of
short-term loans to pay for
materials purchased in the
United States.
Dubinsky emphasized that the
Jewish state is meeting its fi-
nancial obligations promptly in
spite of economic difficulties in
which the country finds itself.
He appealed to the Jews of
America to invest their money in
Israeli bonds, especially in bonds
issued by the Amon Israeli
Corporation, which is building
homes in Israel.

Budget of $1,096,000
For Hillel Foundations

CHICAGO, (JTA)-A budget
of $1,096,000 for the activities of
Bnai Brith Hillel Foundations in
1951 was adopted here by the
National Hillel Commission.
Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld, di-
rector of the Hillel Foundations,
reported at the meeting that
application for Hillel Services
from 20 universities and colleges
are being considered, but that
lack of funds had kept the pro-
gram from expanding to meet
the demand. The Commission
voted to continue the Hillel For-
eign Student Service, under
which 37 foreign students are
maintained in American univer-
sities.
