Yiddish Press. Feud
Over Silver Charge

NEW YORK, (AJP) — A vio-
lent controversy rages in the
Yiddish press over the allegedly
pro-Soviet stand of Rabbi Abba
Hillel Silver, world Zionist lead-
e r.
Involved in the controversy
are the Forward, pro-Socialist
daily established by Abraham
Cahan; the Day, pro-Zionist
Yiddish daily and staunch sup-
porter of Rabbi Silver; and the
Freiheit, Yiddish organ of the
U.S. Communist Party.
The controversy was touched
off when the Forward pub-
lished a column by Editor Harry
Rogoff, lambasting Rabbi Silver
for his attacks on the foreign
policy of the Truman adminis=
tration.
Rabbi Silver responded briefly
during a meeting here by re-
ferring to the writer on the
Forward as a "journalistic
tramp".
The Day followed up with a
blistering attack on the Forward
charging it slandered Rabbi Sil-
ver and that the Rogoff column
gave ammunition to the Ameri-
can Fascists, to the Peglers, and
the Gerald L. K. Smiths, the
(Merwin) Harts and their ilk
to be used to incite American
opinion against the Jews.
The Forward claimed that on
the central issue, the Day said
the Frieheit had distorted Rabbi
Silver's statements.
In reply to the Day attack,
Rogoff wrote a second -column
in which he amplified his first
statement.

These six members of the Israel cabinet are scheduled to ar-
rive in the U.S. in the next few weeks to give active support to
the United Jewish Appeal for $203,684,577 and to participate in
the Israel government $500,000,000 bond issue. They will address
major communities for both the UJA and the bond drive and will
also consult with officers of the UJA on emergency measures for
the transfer to Israel of more than 60,000 Jews from Iraq facing
a May 31 emigration deadline. Left to right, top line, Premier and
Minister of Defense, DAVID BEN-GURION; Minister of Finance,

IRO to Continue Action Until
Other Services Are Formed

Continuation of the Interna-
tional Refugee Organization un-
til other international refugee
services are established has been
recommended by major volun-
tary immigration agencies of all
countries, it was reported by
Carlos Israels, treasurer of
United Service for New Ameri-
cans.
Israels has just returned from
Geneva, Switzerland, where he
attended a five-day meeting of
non-governmental agencies held
under the auspices of the United

Nations and the International
Labor Office. He was accom-
panied by Arthur Greenleigh,
the agency's executive director
who also is chairman of the
advisory committee to the Dis-
placed Persons Commission.
