ANN ARBOR (AJP)—No man
to rest on his laurels, 63-year-
old Dr. Reuben L. Kahn, devel-
oper of the Kahn test for the
detection of syphilis, has scored
another significant medical ad-
vance.
The Jewish medical scientist
has developed a technique which
may give modern medicine a
foolproof method of detecting
any disease long before normal
symptoms appear in a sick per-
son.
Because of the importance of
early detection in all disease,
particularly cancer, Dr. Kahn's
new findings have drawn wide-
spread medical attention.
Dr. Kahn, who is chief of the
serology laboratory at the Uni-
versity of Michigan, calls his
new blood test the "universal
reaction." In addition to giving
medical science a means of de-
tecting disease before the clini-
cal symptoms become apparent,
the test offers a method of
measuring the effectiveness of
various methods of treatment.
Dr. Kahn's findings are re-
ported in his new book, "An
Introduction to the Universal
Reaction in Health and Disease",
published by the Commonwealth
Fund of New York.
From 25 years of study of the
human body's natural defenses,
Dr. Kahn reports that healthy
persons have a certain number
of "anti - bodies", organisms
which destroy invading bacteria.
According to his theory, the
number of antibodies increase
whenever they respond to a
threat of disease germs. He
believes that the amount of in-
crease differs with each disease.
By counting the number of
antibodies in a person's blood-
stream during health, any
change would register the pre-
sence of a certain disease germ.
He found that in healthy per-
sons, there was an unchanging
blood serum pattern, !which
changed very sharply when a
disease started. He concluded
that any marked change in a
person's 'universal pattern'
should be considered by the
doctor as a warning of trouble
coming.
The theory was put to test in
the case of five diseases—syphi-
lis, yaws, leprosy, malaria and
tuberculosis. He found that not
only a return to the normal
"universal pattern" for sick per-
sons who were cured but also
that specific blood serum pat-
terns could be and were worked
out for syphilis, yaws and lep-
rosy.
Dr. Kahn is convinced that
distinctive patterns can be
worked out for tuberculosis and
malaria.
