Sniping Goes On In Huleh;
Israel Imposes New Curfew
JERUSALEM— (JTA) —Tension
remained high in the Huleh
region as the Israeli authorities
in charge of the drainage proj-
ect began armoring tractors and
trucks used in the reclamation
of vast swamp area located
on the Israeli-Syrian frontier.
Israeli workers digging drain-
age canals on Jewish-owned
land in the demilitarized zone
of the swamp region have come
under intermittent fire from
Syrian troops for the last few
days. In the latest move to in-
sure the safety of both Israeli
workers and policemen and
Arabs living in the region, the
Israeli authorities imposed a
strict curfew in the area.
A representative of the For-
eign Ministry explained to the
Bristish and French envoys that
the Jewish state is not prepared
to yield its sovereignty over the
demilitarized zone.

McGhee, in Israel, Says
Tensions Are Lessening
TEL AVIV (JTA) —Assistant
Secretary of State George C.
McGhee said prior to his depar-
ture from Israel, that although
grave problems in the Middle
East persist, such as the refugee
question and the failure to at-
tain a peace settlement, "I am
able to 'report a lessening of ten-
sions since my last visit in 1949
and I am confident for the
future."
The American diplomat, who
is in charge of Middle East af-
fairs for the State Department,
arrived in Israel March 27 on
his tour of Middle Eastern cap-
itals and on March 28 left for
the Old City of Jerusalem. .
During his 36 hours in Israel,
McGhee conferred with Presi-
dent Chaim Weizmann, Premier
David Ben - Gurion, Foreign Min-
ister Moshe Sharett, Finance
Minister Elieber Kaplan and
other key Israel figures. He ex-
pressed particular gratification
at meeting Dr. Walter Eytan.
director-general of the Foreign
Ministry, whom he described as
an Oxford college mate.
Commenting . on his swing
around the Middle Eastern cap-
itals, Mr. McGhee declared:
"I had a very satisfactory se-
ries of visits in the Middle East
countries where I had frank and
friendly talks with their leaders.
I am impressed by Israel's re-
markable achievementS in its
few years of statehood. Of the
spirit of vigor and self-dedica-
tion of the people of modern
Israel there is no question; the
people of Israel face many and
complex problems."
meeting of Mapai, Israel's Labor
Party, at the Mograbi Theater.
He emphasized that Israel's
Army became stronger not only
in numbers but also in effi-
ciency. He pointed out that the
security question must remain
the principal target to which all
the country's strength and ef-
forts must be contributed.
Mr. Ben-Gurion expressed his
firm conviction that Israel will
reach complete economic inde-
pendence in essentials within a
few years. He said that plans
are under way to survey the
possibility of copper deposits in
the country, and that lower
rates for electric power are un-
der consideration for the pur-
pose of facilitating the exploi-
tation of iron and mineral de-
posits.
