THE JEWISH NEWS-19 Friday, March 30, 1951 Civil Rights Groups Score Congress for Legislation. Failures Both Houses of the United States Congress were sharply criticized by the American Jew- ish Congress and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People for failure_ to take action to eliminate "those patterns of discrimination and segregation which deny to many Americans that equality of op- portunity and right which is the essence of our democratic sys- tem." This criticism was the high- light of a 96-page report, "Civil Rights in the United States in 1950: A Balance Sheet of Group Relations," which; was released by Dr. David W. Petegorsky, ex- ecutive director of the Congress, and Walter White, executive sec- retary of NAACP. Asserting that only a handful of Senators and Representatives showed any realization of how deep this neglect affects our country's position international- ly, the report pointed out that no substantial action had been, taken by the 81st Congress on the poll tax or ° anti-lynching bills, the prohibition of segre- gation in the armed forces, or any bills for self-government or equality in the District of Col- umbia. History Week to Open May 6 NEW YORK-Jewish History Week will be inaugurated on May 6, for its third annual na- tionwide observance. The proj- ect is conducted under the aus- pices of the American Jewish Historical Society, which is a sponsored organization of the National Jewish Welfare Board. CARD OF THANKS The family of the late Isadore Zemel wishes to thank its rela- tives and friends for the many kindnesses extended during its recent bereavement. TO. 6-3939 after 11;30 a. m. On the Record By NATHAN ZIPRIN (Copyright, 1951, Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.) On the Fighting Fronts I personally rather relish a good community fight occasionally. Particularly when the battling is "l'shem shomayim," or for higher causes. Take Louisville, Ky,., for instance. There, a man who was suspended from synagogue membership in a dispute over the seating of women estimated that he was entitled to $100,000 for the physical and mental agony he went through as a result of being deprived of his status as a synagogue member. He may have a difficult time convincing a judge and jury of the damages he suffered. Yet it is certain that a man who places such a high value on his association with synagogue must be moved by deep motives. If others placed such high value on association with synagogues our houses of worship would really be packed to capacity . . . Or take the case of the Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York. It seems that the planners of the institution had made all sorts of plans but one-to provide the patients with kashruth. The mystery why the planners of a Jewish hospital are averse to kashruth, I am afraid, is one that is not so easy to unravel . . . My good friend Mordecai Danzis, editor-in-chief of the Yiddish daily, "The Day," is busy waging a war of his own against the good-will move- ments in our midst. To Mordecai "good will" is a sort of "grand- mother's medicine." And while blasting the good-will movements, he took a punch at the American JeVsh Committee and the ADL. He doesn't like the idea of their independent fund-raising cam- paigns. It is the opinion of many, he says, that the independent campaign by the Committee has splintered fund-raising for the UJA and he asks how could Mr. Blaustein, president of the AJC, have permitted it and was that his repayment to Israel for the honor it bestowed upon him and for the receptions he had been given by Premier Ben-Gurion and for the catering smiles that were thrown in his direction by Israel's representatives? About People Rumor has it that Rudolph Halley, counsel to the Senate Crime Investigating Committee, is Jewish. The vast majority of his legal staff consists of brilliant young Jewish lawyers. Halley, whose investigation of Ambassador O'Dwyer may cause no end of embarrassment to Truman the Presidential candidate, was, in- cidentally, associate counsel to the Truman War Investigation Committee. Abraham D. Hirsch, civic and industrial leader who has ac- cepted the- post of chairman of the Israel Bond Committee in Jersey City, is a first cousin of Aleph Katz, Yiddish editor of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency and one of the leading Yiddish poets. Ben Henft, former publicity director for the American Jewish Committee, is now associated in the same capacity with the Amer- ican Jewish Congress . . • Jud Teller deserves an assist for securing Ben's services for the Congress. Bernard G. Richards is recovering from serious illness. His friends will be glad to know that he has returned to his office. The ZOA convention will not be held before late this Fall, but even a columnist can predict that President Browdy will be re- elected. There is no other candidate on the horizon for one thing, and, secondly, the incumbent has been doing a great job, par- ticularly in putting over ZOA efforts in behalf of the forthcoming Israel bond drive in the United States. From Faraway Deserts: of Jewry drawn forth by the rebirth of Israel. Known as Hab- anim, these Jews, recently resettled in the Jewish State, lived for countless centuries deep in the inland desert of Iran. Habanim, transported to Israel by the Joint Distribution Com- mittee, are fast becoming accustomed to Israeli ways. This is one of the recent photos of this interesting group of 225 poverty stricken Jews. Priced Right AMERICAN CONCRETE RECEPTACLE CO. Detroit 2, Kith. TO. 8-5880 579 Kenilworth
