A TEN-YEAR TRADITION was
shattered, last week, when Boris
Joffe, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council,
moved to another house . . .
Since the days of Isaac Franck,
the residence at 1674 Atkinson
has been occupied by Council
executive directors . • and came
to be known as the Council's
"parish house."

FAVORITE STORIES • . . by
advertising man Philip Gohrlik.
. . . Charles M. Schwab, steel
magnate, was known personally
by many of his employees, who
regarded him as a "regular guy"
.... One day he went into the
open hearth room of one of his
mills and saw a big hairy-
chested workman with the glow
of furnaces reflected in his
sweat . .. "Sam," Schwab said,
"you look like an old Rem-
brandt" . . . and the laborer,
mopping his brow replied, "Well,
you don't look so good yourself,
Charlie."

berger were married, last week,
on his Army furlough ... Guests
were notified at '7:30 p.m. the
same day . . . The ceremony
started at 8 . . Lillian Mon-
deli and Pvt. Mortie Goldstein
will be married, April 17, at Bel-
Aire .. . on his furlough from

EX-DETROITER Newson She-
witz, now an industrial designer
in Cleveland, hasn't lost his
touch at his favorite hobby, oil
portraiture . • . Newson recently
won first prize award in a com-•
petition conducted by the Great
Lakes Towing Co. of Cleveland
for his portrait of a tugboat .. .
When he was talking about it
with his mother, Mrs. Sam She-
witz, 'Newson informed her, "I
just painted a tugboat" ... His
mother,-with visions in her mind
of Newson standing on a scaf-
folding slapping paint on the
sides of an old hull, wondered
what had become of Newson's
talent . . . until he explained in
his next sentence that he had
painted the tugboat on canvas.

MEMO TO Rabbi Morris Adler
and the officers of Cong. Shaa-
rey Zedek . According to Han-
nah, three-year-old daughter of
Esther and Walter Klein, the
U. S. Government is cooperating
in your publicity ... Hannah
saw the picture of the Treasury
Building on a ten dollar bill and
exclaimed, "Ooh, that's Shaarey

IRVIN SPITZ was the victim
of a broken windshield, last Sun-
day, while waiting for , buddy
Herman Miller outside his apart-
ment building at Boston and
Lawton . . . The perfect aim of
an irate tenant found its mark
after he had become overly an-
noyed by the horn-blowing out-
side . . . and threw something or
other at Irvin's car . . . The
tenant picked the wrong auto,
however, and the noise contin-
ued . , . Irony of, it. all was that

Irvin's horn had gone on the
blink the night before!

A FAVORITE PASTIME of
coal man Morris Madler is re-
calling memories of his yester-
years • and telling them at
informal get-togethers . . Last
week, at the Elmwood Casino in
Windsor, Morris told of the time
his younger brother, and present
partner, Harry, came home from
school and scowled at their fa-
ther ... "I got, in trouble today,
dad, and it's all your fault," said
Harry . . Their father wanted
to know why, and Harry, still
scowling, said, "Remember I
asked you how much $100,000
was?" . . . Pop said that he did
and demanded to know what of
it . . . "Well," Harry told him,
" 'a helluva lot' ain't the right
answer."
