Will Israel Election
End Unholy Alliance

By Special Correspondent of The Jewish News

The Cabinet crisis in Israel is
not due entirely to the religious
edudation issue. The manner in
which all parties — including
Mapam (pro-Russian), the Gen-
eral Zionists, the Communists
and the Herut (Irgun)—joined to
defeat Ben-Gurion is an indica-
tion of something more vital to
Israel's future. (Only the three
Progressives a b_s t a i n e d from
voting. See Editorial, Page 4.)
Surely, pro-Soviet, anti-reli-
gious Mapam does not line up
against the government on a re-
ligious education issue with total
sincerity on that issue. What
Mapam did was to vote for the
overthrow of the government—
in the hope of capturing power
after a general election.
By the same token, the Gen-

eral Zionists aspire to a place
of. power in the government
as a result of the planned new
general elections, and Mizra-
chi, too, seeks more influence.
Insofar as Ben-Gurion is
concerned, he and his Mapai
party are gambling on great
stakes. They hope that the
country at large will see
through political machina-
tions, that the citizens will re-
fuse to be partners in a splin-
tering contest which weakens
government, that the labor
leaders will be given sufficient
power to form an efficient
government on the basis of its
established policies: Advanc-
ing the highest standards of
social justice through a real-
istic program of government
ownership where it is feasible
—including socialized public
service for pioneers; and en-
couragement to private in-
vestors who will be fully pro-
tected in their efforts to as-
sist in Israel's upbuilding.
One thing is clear: David Ben-

Gurion and Mapai are deter-
mined to end the unholy al-
liance which constantly threat-
ens the government's existence
by walkouts, resignations, inti-
midations.
Dr. Chaim Weizmann, presi-
dent of Israel, is opposed to an

immediate general election. But

the issue apparently is being
forced to the front. There will
be a showdown. When Ben- -
Gurion—(J a m e s G. McDonald,
when he was in Detroit last
week, called him the ablest cam-
paigner) faces the voters,. there
may be an entirely ..different
story I from that of the January
municipal elections. .
In many quarters it is hoped
that the General Zionists will
gain sufficient 'strength to be
able to form a government with
Mapai. That, friends of Israel
and those who aspire for the
country's greater industrializa-
tion say, will be a blessing for
the infant state.

new attempts to patch up the
coalition which fell last week,
seek the formation of a broader
coalition government or, dis-
carding both these possibilities,
commence negotiations for a
transitional government to or-
ganize national elections and
serve as a caretaker regime un-
til a new parliament and govern-
ment is elected.
Although Dr. Weizmann ex-
pressed strong objections to the
holding of general elections at
this time of world crisis and dif-
fiCulties in Israel, the stand
taken by most of the parties is
believed to have left him no al-
ternative.
All the major parties expressed
themselves strongly in favor of
new elections. One of them, the
General Zionists, even insisted
that June 5 be set as the dead-
line for the elections. Only one
s m a 11 party, the Sephardim,
came out strongly against new
elections and for a coalition
government based on the present
parliamentary composition.
Dr. Weizmann will ask Mr.
Ben-Gurion to seek formation of
a new government which will
prepare the election and admin-
ister the country until the de-
cision of the electorate is re-
corded.
From all indications, there will
be a general election in Israel
in September; In the interim,
the government of David Ben-
Gurian will continue in power as
a caretaker administration.
