St. Louis ntisiness Leaders Depart
For Survey for Israel and Drive

St.: Louis this week became the
first American community to
send representatives to Israel to
gather first-hand information
on the economic potential of the
Jewish State as part of its pre-
paratory plans for an intensive
effort in behalf of the $500,000,-
000 State of Israel bond issue
which will be floated in this
country on May 1.
RepreSenting the Jewish com-
munity of St. Louis in Israel
are William S. Cohen and Abra-
ham Levin, both very•prominent
in Jewish communal affairs and
in the community's business
world: The St. Louis leaders,
who left by air, expect to•remain•
in Israel several weeks studying
the Jewish State's plans for ag-
ricultural and industrial expan-
Sion in the next three years.
Upon their return both will
report to the community at
large on the results of their fly-
ing survey. They will tour the
country's cities and settlements,
devoting special emphasis to the
manufacturing and industrial
facilities now under construc-
tion.

The $500,000,000 State of
Israel bond issue will be direct-
ed and managed by the Ameri-
can Financial and Development
Corporation for Israel, of which
Henry Morgenthau, Jr., is chair-
man of the board of governors.

The American owner of the
Sargun knitting mill near Tel
Aviv' has reported that the mill
is making a "substantial profit"
after less than four months of
operation. The plant, which
manufacturers T-shirts, cotton.
briefs and other underwear, has
developed a large domestic mar-
ket in Israel, and has already
received an order for 750 dozen
undershirts from Holland, as
well as inquiries from prospec-
tive customers in a number of
other countries. Continued ex-
pansion of Israel's industrial
capacity is one of the primary
purposes of the $500,000,000 Is-
rael Government bond issue.
