Israel Ray of Light in Darkness,
anP aassen T ells Local Zionists
By BETTY °MERMAN
"The emergence of the State
of Israel on the horizon be-
tokens a ray of light in the
dreary gloom of the interna-
tional situation," said Dr. Pierre
Van Paassen last Monday eve-
ning in an address to the Zion-
ist Organization of Detroit at
Northwest Congregation,
Speaking before 700 people on
the subject, "Jerusalem Call-
ing," Dr. Van Paassen, eminent
author, traveler and Unitarian
minister, expressed his belief
that Israel may be the key to
the world situation today. For,
"if the Israeli government can
prove the validity of having free
enterprise live side by side with
the most advance type of col-
lectiveness, then this might be
a subject of investigation for all
social philosophers. For this is
the great debate in the world
today."
Unsolved Problems
Smile Jews feel that the Zion-
ist goal has been attained now
that we have a state again.
They are wrong, according to
Dr. Van Paassen. Only the im-
mediate goal has been achieved.
The country is still in dire
straits economically, The devel-
opment of the land has not
kept pace with the great influx
of immigrants. There is also the
threat of renewed warfare with
the Arabs and the still un-
solved problem of the Arab
refugees.
Zionism, he said, can't be
codified like a religious belief,
The oneness of the Jewish peo-
ple is a recognized thing. There-
fore, American Jewry must help
Israel. Whatever happens in
the State of Israel will leave its
effect on American Jewry.

Closing his speech with a

said he foresees that "in two
years there will be complete
peace in the Near East, with
a confederation of Semitic
states under Israel leadership."
Through the breach of democ-
ray in Israel, freedom for all
will spread over the Asiatic
countries, he said.
