KLAFER ,J fifty years of effort in behalf of land redemption, through the Keren Kayemeth, we in Detroit are proud of the share we have in this work. We rejoice that in redeeming the land for the people of Israel we have been enabled to give a foothold to those of our people who have settled on the land you and I have redeemed. By joining with us in the great task represented by the Jewish National Fund, Detroit Jews have helped keep alive in the hearts and minds of our people the hope of Prof. Her- mann Schapira—the creator of the Kereh Keyemeth ideal— that, with our pennies and our dimes and our dollars we must carry on the job of acquiring the soil inch by inch, if necessary. For more than 20 years the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Jewish National Fund has been a vital force in our community, con- stantly reminding neighbors, friends, relatives to give more and more, as the needs grew. This year it has been my great privilege to serve as your fund-raising chairman. I was ably assisted by Mrs. Albert Prag, Mrs. Philip Cutler and my three co-chairmen — Mesdames Sidney Ravin, Albert Newman and Seldon Leach—and a strong army of more than 100 workers who have stood by my side to make this. glorious victory pos- sible. I wish to thank the many eontributors, the staff and offi- cers of the J e w is h National Fund C o u n c i 1, Mrs. Harry Schwartz, who has served loy- ally as office secretary, The Jewish News and all who have worked with us so loyally. The Jewish State is young and needs the security of our affec- tion that goes with every gift of money and effort we, the worn- en of Detroit, have poured into this noble task annually. I am proud to have been ac- corded the opportunity to serve. May we meet again next year under blue skies and with happy, peaceful hearts. This is the • first time in twenty centuries that the Jewish people are able to celebrate a•Jubilee whose true meaning has to do with Free- dom and the return of our peo- ple to their land. We have in Israel today a million and a quarter Jews, with their own government, their own army, their own post office. The spokesmen for the State of Israel sit with the nations of the world, as participants in solving the problem of human- . ity which is struggling for its existence. Who would have dreamed fifty years ago that we would realize these great accomplishments in our time! It is evident that consecra- tion to service dominates Amer- ican Jewry. Dedication to the ideal of seeing Israel through her crisis is very important to the Jews of America. Thanks to the help and cooperation of the Detroit Jewish Community, the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Jewish National Fund has been a great force in helping raise large surus for the purchase of land in Israel. ' We are very proud to have a Nachlah to per- petuate our work. It has been a - thrilling cam- paign from start to finish — marked by the hopefulness of the cause we served, the gener- ous response of our Detroit fel- low-Jews, the enthusiasm, en- ergy and faith of the women who did the work. At this time, I wish to express my sincere thanks and appreci,- ation to Mrs. William Klafer, General Fund-Raising Chair- man, and her entire staff of of- ficers and workers, and to all members of the Ladies' Auxili- ary of the Jewish National Fund, for the wonderful job they have done this year's campaign. We hope and trust that there will be peace on earth and that We should continue to go for- ward in this noble task. STAR SPANGLED BANNER • Oh say, can you see, by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's -last gleaming. Whose broad stripes and bright stain thro' the perilous fight O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming. And the rockets' red glare and bombs bursting in air Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there; Oh say, does that Star Spangled Banner yet wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
