Israel Bond Issue
Fiat lux—it dawns, it scintillates!
As if by magic is the inner gloom dispelled,
Distilling into light and peace and harmony.
Scrolls that bear illuminated marginalia,
Incunabula of sleeping ages;
Tattered yet legible the manuscripts
Of our teacher, Ben Maimuni.
Vase and urn and decanter
Excavated in Philistia.
Earthenware and sparkling Tyrian vitrus
Glistening in a beam of sunlight.
Box of spices for the exit of the Sabbath,
Crowns of gold and silver to adorn
The - written and revealed word.
Silver goblets, delicately traced by hands of Faith,
Etchings from the far Cathay,
From the remnants,
And the last survivors of Kai-fung.
Oh, what feelings stir my bosom,
Oh, what memories assail my soul!
Babel, Ashur, Parash, Egypt and Cathay
Can never quench, can never quell
The ever-burning bush from Israel.
Shalom!
With the formation of the American Fi-
nancial and Development Corporation, the
long-awaited project for the launching of
an Israel bond issue now is a reality.
Under the leadership of Henry Montor,
the new corporation is setting up machinery
for the sale of Israel's $500,000 bond issue.
Prominent American leaders are being
enrolled as members of the national board
of 100, and included among them are top-
ranking Detroit leaders whose previous com-
munal activities assure their dynamic par-
ticipation in the new undertaking in behalf
of Israel.
The launching of the Israel bond drive
marks the greatest financial effort of its
kind in all history, the only exception in the
magnitude of the new undertaking being the
United States liberty, war and other bond
drives.
Mr. Montor advanced important points
in support of the bond issue when he de-
clared, in the initial statement announcing
the launching of the $500,000,000 bond issue:
"To no people on earth does personal free-
dom mean more than to Israel. They have
demonstrated their will and capacity to fight
for survival. It is among such tough people
that America should be looking for allies. The
American Government, in a variety of ways,
has demonstrated its close association with
Israel. The United States was the first to
recognize the new State of Israel. The United
States extended the first large Export-Import
Bank loan to Israel. A few days ago, the Ex-
port-Import Bank again reflected the high
confidence which our Government has in Is-
rael when it made available another $35,000,-
000 loan for agricultural expansion.
"The American Financial and Development
Corporation of Israel has been established to
give all Americans an opportunity to share in
the growth and expansion of Israel and
through its participation assure the maxi-
mum development as a thriving and forward-
looking democracy, linked in close cooperation
with the United States for the realization of
the ideals of peace and prosperity for all man-
kind.
"In the 31 months of its independence, Is-
rael has demonstrated a remarkable capacity
for industrial and agricultural progress. This
young nation now finds itself surrounded by
opportunities for far greater development
which, however, cannot be fully realized with-
out additional working capital. Israel is a
going concern which requires only adequate
resources to realize the goal of self-sufficiency
and full productivity along the most modern
economic lines."
The American Jewish communities face
a real test through the Israel bond sale.
Our people have an opportunity to show
that, in addition to increasing their gifts to
the United Jewish Appeal, and to other
causes which supply Israel's lifeline, they
are ready to back up a great investment ef-
fort. The bond issue will have an appeal for
non-Jews as well as Jews; but Jews must be
in the front ranks of the purchasers of the
new bonds. It is sincerely to be hoped that
the Israel bond issue will be absorbed speedi-
ly and that inter-faith responses will be
strong indications of the existence of true
good will among all groups towards the most
effective democracy in the Middle East—
Israel.
15 Years Service
The resignation of Herman Jacobs ends
a distinguished. career of 15 years with the
Jewish Community Centers of Detroit. As
director of the Centers, Mr. Jacobs has seen
the movement here grow into the large
Aaron DeRoy Memorial Building on Wood-
ward Avenue. He has supervised the expan-
sion of the movement's program on 12th
Street, in the northwest area and in the new
building on Davison.
The community is indebted to him for
untiring services and all surely wish him
well in all his future activities.

'In the Sun's Free Dower
On the occasion of the 1951 Brotherhood Week, spon-
sored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews,
the following sentiments of the late William Rose Benet,
which originally appeared under the heading "The Choice,"
are being revived:
Fear said to Hate
"Come, let us build a State
Proscribing all save of one tribe or skin
From joy therein!"
But Spirit said to Love
"See a huge world, whereof
All are one body. Quickly, in every land,
Reach hand to hand!"
Alarmed from ambush, sullen before all light,
Crouch Fear and Hate within the caves of night,
While Spirit and Love, from no man fugitive,
Walk in the sun's free dower through which we live.
This conflict between Fear and Hate as against Spirit
and Love is especially applicable in our time, in an era of
threatening wars between differing ideologies. President
Truman, in his message of acceptance of the honorary chair-
manship of Brotherhood Week, saw fit to link the good will
movement among all faiths in this country with the strug-
gle for freedom in-Korea. The President stated:
Selected Treasury of
Readers Digest Humor
Simon and Schuster, the enterprising pub-
lishers, have scored another scoop in the field
of humor. "Ftin Fare: A Treasury of Reader's
Digest Wit and Humor," definitely promises to
make the best seller list.
The fact that the popular magazine's editors
collaborated in selecting the thousands of best
stories and puns appearing in this 320-page
book is sufficient to recommend it. But it has
the additional merit of the assistance, in the
selection of the material, of Bennett Cerf,
Groucho Marx,. Bob Hope, Don Herold, Ogden
Nash and J. P. McEvoy.
Furthermore, this book is enhanced by the
splendid illustrations by Robert Day.
All-in-all, it is an excellent collection of
humor. - Every field of human endeavor is cov-
ered, — and often uncovered. The combined
qualities of Reader's Digest humor are packed
into this volume. It can be read and re-read,
and it will provide fun for the entire family
for a long time.
The Index, by titles, will serve as a guide
to public speakers—although some orators may
be inclined to give up the platform when they
read that "speeches are like steer horns—a point
here, a point there and a lot of bull in between."
Anyway, we recommend this book. It will keep
you in good spirits.
Meier Shfeya in Action
"The survival of freedom in our world depends on the
ability of free men to unite in a common program in support
of the democratic institutions that nourish and sustain free-
dom. This common program requires the simultaneous devel-
opment of our military potential and the strengthening of our
economic institutions. To direct these efforts, however, on be-
half of freedom we must maintain the position of moral leader-
ship which binds us in a common purpose.
Illustrated Story of
Jr. Hadassah's Village
"Meier Shfeya, A Children's Village in Israel,"
is the title of a book by Sonia Gidal, in collabo-
ration with her husband, Nahum Tim Gidal, who
produced the pictures. Behrman House, 1261
Broadway, New York 1, published this fascinating
children's nook.
But it is more than a mere story. It is the
true tale of one of the most interesting villages
in Israel — the Junior Hadassah settlement.
Sonia came to Palestine with the aid of Youth
Aliyah which brought her out of Berlin. She
studied photoreporting with Tim and was given
in marriage to him by Henrietta Szold in 1944.
The Gidals prepared the story of Meier Shfe-
ya, in story and pictures, for their four-year-old
son, Peter Emanuel. It was considered so good
that it now is available for all young English
readers who will learn the make-up of the vil-
lage, its government, its postman who delivers
mail on donkey-back, its (of all things!) secre-
tary of bicycling, its musicians and farmers, its
variety of youth settlers from all over the world.
Junior Hadassah will find this little book a
valuable instrument to advance its cause. But
its leaders in all English-speaking countries will
be thrilled anew with another aspect of state-
buiding—through a children's village supported
with funds from the United States.
"We have recently seen in the United Nations' action in
Korea a convincing demonstration of the ability of the free
nations of the world to unite in defense of their principles.
"The people of the Republic of Korea have made great sac-
rifices and have seen their homes and their cities devastated by
warfare. We must now proceed to embark upon a program of
rehabilitation and reconstruction which will enable the Korean
people again to enjoy the blessings of political and economic
democracy which were so long denied them.
"ACting through the United Nations, the free people of the
world will help the Korean people because it is in the nature of
brotherhood to assist the unfortunate. This is the true mean-
ing of the practice of brotherhood."
In view of the continuing world conflict, in which we
have such an important stake—to defend our rights as free
human beings and to prevent the intrusion of totalitarianism
into free America—the vision of Mr. Benet impresses itself
upon us with greater force. The aim of the free peoples is
to assure that "Spirit and Love, from no man fugitive," will
"walk in the sun's free dower through which we live."
A Jewish Hospital - At Last!
A 40-year-old community aspiration is nearing realiza-
tion. The ground-breaking ceremonies for the Detroit Jew-
ish Hospital will mark the end of four decades of propa-
ganda for the idea and nearly five years of fund-raising
campaigns.

the Book of Samuel we find Abigail blessing
David with the words: "May the soul of my

Commentaries like to interpret this as saying
that the "bond of life" would save him from
death.
