Opens With Address by Dr. Wirth

Prof. Louis Wirth, of the Uni-
versity of Chicago, will be the
opening speaker in the first
series of "Leo M. Franklin Lec-
tures in Human Relations,"
projected for annual presenta-
tion to Detroiters through a
memorial plan set up in 1949.
He will speak on "Freedom,
Power, and Values in Our Pres-
ent Crisis" at 8 p.m., Thursday,
Feb. 15, in the Rackham Me-
morial Building, Woodward at
Farnsworth.
The lecture series and a me-
morial professorship at Wayne
University are included in the
plan, proposed by Temple Beth
El and approved by the Detroit
Board of Education, in honor of

1948 after 42 years as rabbi at
the Temple.

At a convocation, marking the
last session of the winter se-
mester of the Young Israel In-
stitute of Jewish Studies, held
Wednesday in the Young Israel
Center, plans were announced
for the spring Institute, begin-
ning on Feb. 7, Registration will
be accepted beginning Jan. 31
for classes in history. philosophy,
liturgy, proverbs and Hebrew I.
The faculty includes Rabbi Max
Kapustin, Rabbi Abraham Zent-
man, - Dr. - Hugo Mandelbaum,
Morris Nobel, and Rabbi Samuel
H. Prero, director of the -InSti-
