EDWARD ARNOLD is desert-
ing the films for a while and
making his return to the stage
after an absence of 18 years.
He arrives at the Shubert The-
ater as part of a national tour
in the starring role of "Apple
of His Eye," a comedy, on Mon-
day, Jan. 8. The comedy breaks
the ironclad hold the film world
has had on Arnold since he first
ventured out to the cinema cap-
ital almost two decades ago. He
has since appeared in more
than 160 films.

Scheduled events for YOUNG
ISRAEL this week include a
forum at 8:30 p.m., today; a
meeting of the Women's League
at 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, featuring
a talk on "Me
ntal Hygiene for
Children"; and the last session
of the Institute of Jewish Stu-
dies at 8:30 p.m., Wednesday.
All meetings take place at the
Young Israel Center on Dexter.

Warn Groups Helping
Israel of Restrictions

JERUSALEM, (JTA) - T h e
Ministry of Agriculture made it
clear today that the lifting of
all restrictions on sending gift
food parcels to Israelis from
abroad applies only to parcels
sent by individuals and not by
public institutions whose funds
are destined for Israel.
The sending of food parcels
by public institutions of the lat-
ter category is considered harm-
ful for the planning of imports
and would hamper the work of
insuring ample food supplies for
the entire population of the
Jewish state, it was indicated.

tion that I read of the persis-
tents of certain Jewish organi-
zations to sponsor night club
entertainment on their pro-
grams, barn dances and such
level of entertainment. This in
spite of all the efforts to ele-
vate Jewish programming and
give it Jewish content on the
part of so many local agencies.
I am always appalled when
Jewish singers insist on spirit-.
uals, musical comedy stuff, etc.,
etc., and refuse the rich Jewish
music which is available today.
Is there no way to educate the
"artists," or even • better, the
audiences?
Could program chairmen be
circularized to be made con-
scious of public reaction? It
could be tried.

NEW YORK, (AJP) - Israel's
Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett
repeated his belief this week
that Yiddish no longer played
an important role in the cul-
tural life of Jews outside Israel.
The statement came in response
to a question from a representa-
tive of a Yiddish daily news-
paper here.
At the close of a press con-
ference at the Israel Consulate
at which Minister Sharett and
Israel Ambassador Abba Eban
addressed reporters, the Yiddish
reporter approached Shar ett
and inquired whether a state-
ment attributed to him and ex-
pressing belief that Yiddish no
longer played a prime role in
Jewish diaspora life was cor-
rect.
Sharett replied in the affirm-
*tive adding that he was "con-
vinced" that Yiddish no longer
played a prime role in the cul-
tural lives of Jews outside of
Israel. He said that his con-
clusions were "a matter of fact"
and that the decline of Yiddish
in the cultural life of the dia-
spora was "regretable."

Goldstein was at the front only

Goldstein, well-known at the
