The Detroit Friends of the
Jewish Theological Seminary
announces that Dr. Moshe
Davis, Dean of the Seminary
Teacher's Institute, will be prin-
cipal speaker at an evening meet-
ing to be held in the auditorium
of Northwest Hebrew Cong. on
Jan. 8.
Dr. Davis is editor of the
Seminary's NBC "Eternal Light"
program, and has just returned
from a six month stay in Israel.
He will speak on "Israel and
America."
The Detroit Friends of the
Seminary represents the four
congregations of Detroit which
are served by graduates of the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
There will be no admission
charge and no solicitation of
funds. The community is invit-
ed.

N.W. Synagogue Places Cornerstone

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Break-
ing with centuries of Jewish re-
ligious tradition, the Society for
th Advancement of Judaism, a
New York congregation headed
by Dr. Mordecai Kaplan—leader

of the Reconstructionist move-
ment has decided to count
women in a Minyan and to call
them to the Torah during Sab-
bath services.
In an interview with the Jew-
ish Telegraphic Agency, Dr.
Kaplan confirmed the fact that

Cong. Beth AbrahaM Holds
Cemetery Association Dinner

The annual dinner meeting of
the Cemetery Association of
Cong. Beth Abraham will be
held at 8:30 p.m., Saturday in
the social hall. The annual re-
port will be given, and election
of officers will be held. The
meeting is open to all members
of the congregation.

Dr. Geo. Miller, Dean of ad-
missions at Wayne University,
will deliver a lecture to Bnai
Moshe school of adult studies at

"Do We Really Know Our
Youth" is the subject of Dr. Mil-
ler's address. Classes begin at 8
and end at 9, followed by the
lecture from 9 to 10. The public

The issue had been discussed by
members of the congregation
and its board for months before
the- final vote, Dr. Kaplan said.
The congregation's action was
taken, he pointed out, in line
with its desire to have Jewish
women play a greater role in the
advancement of the Jewish Com-
munity and in Jewish education.
Calling up women to the Torah,
he stated, was seen by members
of the SAJ as a- token of re-
sponsibility for women for the
continuation of Jewish unity,
the Jewish future and Jewish
education. He stressed the fact'
that Jewish education is sym-
bolized in the Torah.
