One of the great dangers to
our civil rights today is that
"illusion" and "reality" tend to
be confused. The reality of civil
rights - social meaning and
significance, their relevance to
self - government - is steadily
being undermined in ways that
do not seem to involve violation
of individual. civil rights.
For example, if radio news-
casters are instructed in what
to say' and how to say it, what
individual civil liberty has been
violated- Eyeryone's right to free
speech is still officially intact
but no one dares to speak.
This system of current attack
on civil rights is really, there-
fore, an attempt to suppress
ideas; it is concerned with
thought-control and heresy.
In my book "Witch Hunt, The
Revival of Heresy" I have tried
to demonstrate that heresy
hunts are based on a delusion;
that. 'ideas' exist independently
of human affairs; the ideas- can
be labeled 'good' and 'bad'; the
'bad' ideas the source- of all the
trouble in the world. Therefore,
a censor should be appointed
and the bad ideas ,..suppressed.
But, since you can't prosecute an
idea; you must 'prosecute a per-
son:
Over and beyond all this is a.
preoccupation of mind with the
fallacies 'of social perception.
For example, the Source of pre-
judice is -found in the prejudiced
person, n o t in the minority
group. We know that it is very
difficult to convince the pre-
judiced person of -this. He does
not see the situation out of
which racial prejudice emerges;
he sees only .the person , he is
prejudiced against. We do not
See the source of heresy; we see
the heretic.
"Witch Hunt" is a guide to
witch hunting; the how, :why,
by whom, for what, and- with
what. It is every man's guide to
the tricks and delusions in-
volved in running down the
heretic. It is also an attempt
to humanize the politics of a
paranoid age by showing that
the witch hunter and the witch
are both victims of self-decep-
tion.

CIO Endorse% Work of
Jewish Labor Committee

The national convention of
CIO, recently held in Chicago
endorsed the manifold activities,
domestic and overseas, conduct-
ed by the Jewish Labor Commit-
tee. The resolutions committee,
of ,which Walter Reuther, pres-
ident of the United Automobile
Workers is chairman, and Jo-
seph Curran, president of the
National Maritime Union, is sec-
retary, reported on a resolution
which commends the role played
by the JLC in combatting totali-
tarianism abroad, the assistance
given to the free • trade unions
in various countries, the con-
structive program of supporting
cooperatives, Children's homes
and rehabilitation projects.

Indian Jews Facing.
Emigration Problems

completed a week-long visit to
Jewish communities in the Ma-
labar area, on Indian's South-
west coast, reported that the
most important problem facing
Jews in that sector is emigra-

tion.

About ;100 of the 200 Cochin
Jews living in the Malabar
area have already reached
Israel, and the remaining mem-
bers • of the community are
awaiting the oppbrtunity to pro-
ceed to the Jewish state. The
Jews of Cochin, who are dark-
ski•ned and resemble the Yeme-
nite Jews, have been living in
India for some - 2,000 years. A
mass transfer of Jews from Co
chin and the other communi-
ties- in Malabar to Israel is ex .
