Preliminary reports from vari-
Northwest Hebrew Congregation,
on Nov. 30, several hundred His-
tadrut adherents pledged their
untiring efforts to the drive,
which will continue until March.
• Responding to an urgent
appeal for immediate funds to
assure uninterrupted func-
tioning of -Histadrut agencies
in Israel, a group of people at
the meeting advanced $30,000
as a loan to Histadrut. Spear-
head by an advance of $5,000
made by the veteran labor
Zionist leader, Morris L. Scha-
ver, who was chairman of the
first 10 Histadrut campaigns
here and who has been elected
honorary chairman of the 1950
drive, the loans ranged from
$100 upwards.
Morris Lieberman, chairman
of the drive, reviewed the 30-
ous divisions and landsman-
schaften indicate that initial
solicitations are showing sub-
stantial increases of contribu-
tions over last year.
The furniture division, under
the leadership of Nathan Shec-
ter and Jack Malamud, reported
that 100 percent of last year's
quota has been raised already
with 50 new contributors added
to the roll of friends of Hista-
drut among furniture dealers.
The commercial workers' divi-
sion, headed by Harold Silver,
has reached 30 percent of its
quota and has made extensive
plans to reach all Jewish com-
munal workers and teachers.
-Louis Levine, chairman of
organizations, reported that
steps have been taken to in-
tensify Histadrut campaign
activities among landsman-
schaften and societies for
whom Histadrut evenings are
being arranged.
The Labor Zionist movement
has mobilized all its branches of
Labor Zionist Organization and
Farband for an all-out effort in
behalf of the Israel Histadrut
campaign.
The second Histadrut cam-
paign -rally will be held Thurs-

stitute. A guest speaker will be
featured.

ThurSday, Dec. 14, to hear a re-
port on latest achievements of
the Israel House of Wisdom and
to see a movie
showing the
university at
work.
Charles E.
Feinberg, chair-
man of the De-
troit chapter,
announces that
this meeting
will be ad-
dressed by Har- C. E. Feinberg
ry Friedgut, executive director
of the American Friends of the
University, and that the new
sound motion picture, "The
House on the Hill," will have its
first Detroit showing at that
time.
The entire community is in-
vited to this meeting, admission
being free. There will be no
solicitation of funds.
The new sound motion pie-
tune, portraying the role of the
Hebrew University in the build-
ing of the modern state of
Israel, was recently produced in
Israel. It shows graphically
how the Hebrew University
helped defend Jerusalem and
build the modern State of Israel.
With the exception of three
characters, all of the parts are
played by students and members
of the faculty of the University.
An elderly professor of geol-
ogy is the narrator of the film,
and through his eyes, the Uni-
versity is shown in distinct and
human terms. One of the ex-
citing high points of the film
is the battle on the- outskirts of
Jerusalem when a University
convoy is ambushed by Arabs.
The film also shows how direct-
ly and intimately the University
is bound up with the lives of the
people and how it continues to
serve as Israel's only University.

In the course of the evening,
Mr. Lieberman was presented
with a certificate, engraved by
a noted New York artist, ex-
pressing the thanks of • the na-

work as chairman of last year's
drive. The presentation w a s
made by Mr. Schaver who de-
livered an address describing the
work of Histadrut as he had
seen it in Israel.
The appeal for loans w a s
made by Louis Levine who also
spoke of his experiences in Is-

there.
Harry Schumer, chairman
of the executive board of the
Detroit Histadrut Campaign,
in his opening remarks pre-
senting Mr. Lieberman as
chairman of the meeting, call-
ed for the pooling of all forces
to. assure a triumph for the
drive in a time when the
hands of the builders of Israel
must be upheld in order .to as-
sure continuation of the basic
principles motivating the Jew-
ish state.
Dr. Joachim Prinz of Newark,
N. J., one of the principal speak-
ers, declared that "the reality of
Israel today couldn't be without
the Histadrut," He asserted
that Israel is the only politically
stable factor in the Near East
and urged that this country
should do all it can to assure
security for the Jewish state as
a vital partner in the battle-for
democracy.
Dr. Zalman Grinberg, first
chairman of the Jewish Liber-
ation Committee in Germany,
now director of the Beilinson
Hospital in Israel, spoke of
Histadrut's great role in Israel
and its aim for the morrow.
He emphasized that Kupat
Holim, the Histadrut health
service, needs more clinics,
new equipment and homes for
nurses.
Dr. Grinberg asserted that
the Histadrut members, whose
ranks have swelled tremendously
in recent years, continue to
share all they have to assure
the retention of the open door
policy for all who wish to settle
in the Jewish state.
In a stirring statement, Dr.
Grinberg declared that "His-
tadrut is interested in private
investment and does not seek
control." He declared that ru-
mors to the contrary are lies
which must be condemned in
the best interests of the Jew-
ish state."

at the piano.
