Halt Confiscation of Food
Parcels From Immigrants

cials have been ordered by the
Ministry of Agriculture to cease
confiscating food parcels
brought by new immigrants as
a procedure contrary to PreMier
DaVid Ben-Gurion's declaration
in the Knesset.

With UPA Aid in 10 Years

NEW YORK—American Jews t
have helped rehabilitate and re-
settle 582,000 immigrants
through the United Palestine
Appeal during • the past decade,
with an average of $430 contrib-
uted towards the total integra-
tion costs. of each newcomer,
Rudolf G. Sonneborn declared in
his first report as UPA- national
chairman.
Mr. Sonneborn 'disclosed that

the past 10 years for the UPA
agencies' immigration and de-
velopment • program." He said

The credit, granted on Jan.
19, 1949, accounted for approxi-
mately 7 per cent of Israel's
total commodity imports f o r
1949 and about 17 per cent of
the commodity imports so far
this year
The $80,000,000 spent to date
enabled Israel to go a long way
towards filling most essential
needs in agriculture, industry,
housing and transportation and
communications. -•
Agriculture took the largest
slice of the loan,- with $33,000,000
poured into the purchase of U.S.
irrigation and farm machinery,
building materials, trucks and
eattle. Largest item was a $20,-
500,000 credit to the Jewish
AL Agency for the equipping of 200
new settlements.
Israel 's 500,000 . newcomers
Were also beneficiaries of $19,-
000,000 spent on housing and
municipal public works. Includ-
ed in the expenditures were $14,-
000,000 for American construc-
tion materials as well as sewage
and water supply systems and a
road-building program involving
the construction of 230 miles of
urban streets and 130 miles of
inter-urban roads.
