UN Committee Approves Reintegration Fund; Sharett Asks Israel to Cooperate --. LAKE SUCCESS, (JTA) —The United Nations Ad Hoc Political I Committee adopted without a dissenting vote a joint resolu- tion setting up a reintegration fund of $30,000,000 to be utilized for projects requested by any government in the Near East for the permanent re-establishment of Palestine refugees and their removal from relief. The resolution, introduced by France, Turkey, Britain and the United States also provides for t h e appointment of a "ne- gotiating committee" of seven or more members to sound out UN member governments on their willingness to contribute on a voluntary basis both to this Palestine refugee fund and to the proposed relief and re- habilitation program for Korea. The resolution notes that suf- ficient contributions to carry out the previous works and re- lief program in the Near East had not been forthcoming, and the negotiating committee, it is hoped, can redress that situa- tion. The resolution also provides 1or the raising of $20,000,000 for continuation of direct relief to refugees until mid - 1952. The Secretary General of the United Nations is meanwhile author- ized to make available from the UN's working capital fund $5,- 000,000 to finance beginning op- erations, but to be repaid by the end of 1951. Israel has indicated that it is willing to discuss the terms of some compensation payments which would go into the reinte- gration fund. The vote on the resolution was 43-0, with six ab- stentions. Israel voted in favor. It must now be approved by a two-thirds vote of the General Assembly. Israel- Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett declared that Young Jewish Singer Heads Bowery Cast Eddie Fisher, young Jewish baritone, who has been voted the most popular singer of the year, will head the new show opening Monday, at Frank Bar-I baro's Bowery. Fisher skyrocketed to national s fame as Eddie Cantor's latest protege, and has toured from coast to coast with the famous Comedian. He is an RCA ,Victor recording star. ; His recordings include "My Bolero, " "Foolish Tears," "Sorry," "Yesterday's Rose s," `'Am I Wasting My Time?," "I Love You Because" and his two latest releases, "Where in the World" and "A Little Bit Inde- pendent" on which he is teamed for the first time with RCA's ilhoutstanding arranger - 1 e a d e r, Hugo Winterhalter. Comedian Larry Kent, a fav- orite with Detroiters, will hold over for a fourth week as the feature of the new show. An- other ' local favorite, M i c k e y Woolf, and his orchestra, stay on as the bandstand attraction. Mickey and his brbther Sam team up for some unexcelled Vocal entertainment. Israel had a moral obligation as a United Nations member state to contribute to the pro- posed reintegration fund for assistance to Palestine re- fugees and a special obliga- tion, which is to start paying compensation for abandoned Arab lands in Israel. "We are ready to do so on the under- standing that this compensa- tion will go into the reinte- gration fund," he said. 24—THE JEWISH N E W S Friday, December 8 , 19 50 Sharett appeared on a na- tionwide radio interview pro-: gram with UN correspondents. He said that Israel had taken in refugees running in numbers to five figures but that the country was no longer capable of absorbing additional numbers. He emphasized that vast op- portunities, however, exist in t h e neighboring Arab states, where the refugees would in ad- dition be re-established under more congenial conditions. Schaefer Cong.
