For Jewish Assembly
To Synagogue Women
MINNEAPOLIS, (JTA) — Dr.
Louis Finkelstein, president of
the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, addressing the con-
vention of the Women's League
of the United Synagogue of
America, called for the creation
of a "Jewish assembly" for the
benefit of modern spiritual life.
Rabbi Finkelstein said that
"Judaism needs, for a spiritual
life, a Jewish assembly of schol-
ars, rabbis, laymen and lay-
women," Rabbinic Judaism, he
added, "requires interpretation
to meet the challenges of our
time."
Delegates pledged themselves
to a "fellowship plan" in which
they said they would "partici-
pate consciously in the creation
of a vibrant American Judaism
for today and tomorrow." The
delegates said they would "make
the Sabbath. operative" in their
lives.
The convention approved a
$250,000 goal for the League's

Aim at Attendance
WASHINGTON, (JTA) — A
survey of Conservative S y n a-
g o g u e attendance throughout
the country has revealed a dis-
couraging pictur e, the only
bright spot of which is to be
found in the junior congrega-
tions of youth, Dr. Emil Leh-
man, assistant executive direc-
tor of the United Synagogue of
American said.
The survey, conducted in co-
operation with t h e Columbia
University Bureau of Social re-
search, indicated that only one
third of the membership of sy-
nagogues attends Friday night
services.
Dr. Lehman suggested that
lay hearings be held to discuss
faults of present services and
ways of improving attendance.
He said Conservative attendance
was "gloomy—like in all church-
es."
'A campdign to re-activate the
Sabbath is planned, to be car-
ried out by what Dr. Lehman
described as sound, modern ad-
vertising technique s.
Adoption of a resolution call-
ing for Israel to end "the pres-
ent involvement of religion in
politics" which was described as
"contrary to the best democat-
ic traditions," highlighted the
closing session. Other resolutions
urged support of Israel and ask-
ed the American government to
instruct the Voice of America
radio program to 'include read-
ings from Scriptural and other
religious sources.
The convention called for re-
peal of the McCarran Act and
asked oCngress "to establish and
maintain procedures governing
all its various committees in-
vestigating subversive and un-
American activities so as to pro-
tect the fundamental rights of
all persons." While they con-
demned Communism, the dele-
gates resolved to petition Con ,
gress to repeal the McCarran
Act, because "ma,ny of its provi-
sions flagrantly depart from
democratic principles and long
established practice."

knowledge of the Hebrew Lam
guage, of the Bible, and Prayers,
studies of Jewish History, are
all essential needs of your child.
But these are not enough! A
background in modern Jewish
living is of great importance.
With this in mind the United
