Fordomatic Drive
1951 Car feature
Fordomatic Drive, a :combina-
tion. of a torqUe converter and
planetary _gear train, making :a
highly - elf:f1 di en t automatic
transmission,= will be an optional
feature of 1951 .Ford passenger
cars to be introduced to the pubr
lic Friday.
The new transmission is the
result of more than four years
of intensive research by engin-
eers of the Ford Motor Co. to
meet rigid requirements for ef-
ficiency, dependable operation,
driver comfort and economy.
Fordomatic Drive, unlike most
automotive transmissions, multi-
plies the "torque" or twisting
force generated by the engine
in varying degrees and applies
it to the rear axle- and wheels
as necessary to propel the car.
Ford's hydraulic torque con-
verter transmission is combined
with gears which provide three
forward speeds and one reverse.
The transmission is controlled
by a selector lever having five
positions-park, reverse, neutral,
drive and low.
