Topping my list of favorite
Hollywood film writers is Carl
Foreman, who wrote such out-
standing screenplays as "The
Champion," "Home of the
Brave," "The Men," and is now
working on the. adaptation of
"Cyrano de Bergerac."
Foreman maintains that much
of his inspiration comes from
good cooking, and his favorite
dish is:
CHICKEN PAPRIKA
chicken,• cut in serving pieces
1 or 2 large onions
1 cup diced carrots
1 green pepper
2 bay leaves
3 h cup diced celery
garlic, salt, pepper and paprika.
Rub the chicken with garlic
and season well with salt and
pepper and lots of paprika. (It
can also be dipped in flour be-
fore the seasoning is added, but
the flour is not necessary and
is apt to burn and smoke before
the chicken is browned.)
Brown all the pieces in a fry-
ing pan in fat, turning frequent-
ly. It is easier to brown the
chicken evenly if your pan is
not too full, so if you need to
fry it in two batches, do so.
Place alternate layers of vege-
tables and chicken in a stewing
pot, leaving a layer of vegetables
for the top. Season each layer
well and cover with a lid that
fits your pot. Cook on low fire
for 3 hours. Tomatoes and green
peas may be added, if desired,
to the above vegetables.
Israel Needs Economic
Stability, Says Silver
NORFOLK, VA., (JTA) — Dr.
Abba Hillel Silver declared that
"the young state of Israel will
not be strong and secure until
there are three to four million
Jews there, firmly rooted in a
stable economy." He added that
"The state of Israel cannot by
its own resources accomplish
this any more than it could
have achieved its political inde-
pendence by its own efforts ex-
clusively.
Dr. Silver was the guest
speaker at a banquet which
closed the two-day silver jubi-
lee conference of the Seaboard
Region of the Zionist Organiza-
tion of America. More than 500
delegates attended. Isador S.
Turover, of Washington, was
unanimously elected for a sec-
ond term as president of the
region.

`Self-Sufficiency' Will
End Israel Rationing
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The sys-
tem of rationing food and other
commodities will continue in
Israel until the country achieves
self-sufficiency, Premier David
Ben - Gurion told parliament.
"Until then, we will not allow
much for few, but everybody
will receive a just share," he
added.
The new Cabinet held its first
meeting at the residence of
President Chaim Weizmann in
Rehovot. The President was
greeted by Premier Ben-Gurion
on behalf of all members of the
new government. In response
Dr. Weizmann congratulated
Mr. Ben-Gurion and all Minis-
ters of the new Cabinet on their
successfully overcoming the re-
cent Cabinet crisis.
NEW YORK (JTA)--"Educa-
tional development must not be
retarded in Israel—even during
the present crisis—if the Jewish
state is to remain an occidental
country with high standards,
and not become another Syria
or Lebanon," Prof. Eliezer Rie-
ger, chairman of the School of
Education at the Hebrew Uni-
versity, declared at a meeting of
the national board of directors
of the National CoUncil of Jew-
ish Women.
Prof. R.ieger pointed out that
a large percentage of the popu-
lation in Israel is now composed
of Jews from Oriental countries;
that "the four separate educa-
tional systems in Israel—two re-
ligious, one labor and one gen-
eral in orientation—constitute a
menace to a free society"; that
the School of Education which
is outside these divisions, is at-
tempting to counteract the use
of education as a political in-
strument.
He lauded the support given
by the National Council of Jew-
ish Women to the School of
Education.
The meeting adopted a budget
of $625,000 for the 1950-51 fiscal
year—the largest in the organi-
zation's 57-year history. Mrs.
Irving M. Engel, president • of
the Council, reported that the
organization now has 94,000
members and 240 local sections
throughout the country.
