Tourists who return from Is-
rael are generally very critical
of one or another aspect of the
life in Israel, and particularly
•of the life in the Kibutzim, and
more particularly of • the multi-
plicity of parties in Israel at
which very much criticism has
been levelled.
An article which appeared in
the "D'vor Hashovua," a weekly
supplement to the daily Davar,
is therefore of interest. The ar-
ticle is in the form of an inter-
view given by the famous Bel-
gian poet, Rogie Budaiar. He
was interviewed by A. Lerner,
the son of the late poet, Yaakov
Lerner, whose widow is now vis-
iting with her family, the Wino-
kurs, in Detroit.
Impressed by Kibutzim
He said in part: "I have been
deeply impressed with the
achievements of the Kibutzim
and Kvutzot. I visited many of
them. It is my impression that
while Europe is still dreaming of
social improvements, Israel has
already reached the realization
stage of many of those dreams.
The experiment is extremely
successful. What surprised me
mostly is the fact that while in
Kibutzim you work and live AO-
gether, you have not eliminated
or subdued, in any manner, the
spirit of individual freedom. I
find much friendship among the
individual members of each Kib-
utz, as well as between one
Kibutz and the other..
"One more thing with which
I was greatly impressed is the
choice one has in selecting that
particular group to which he is
,best fitted by his background
and world outlook. One may, for
instance, join an extreme Ortho-
dox Group, or attach himself to
a liberal party, to a Moshav or
to a Kvutzah. Whatever one's
inclination and life philosophy
may be, in Israel, he finds that
group in which he will locate a
niche for himself.

Harmonious Living

"While we see in Israel a
great number of various .life
forms, we, nevertheless, see at
the same time that all these
forms merge into one harmoni-
ous whole, like a group of in-
struments which combine to
form a well-integrated orchestra.
"I am fully aware of the fact
that there are many differences
as far as political views are
concerned. But -it seems to me
that even this isn't harmful. In
one • Kibutz, for instance, I
found members of the Mapai,
of the Mapam and of the Agu-
dah; and all of them live, work
and create a new life together
in a spirit of friendliness, har-
mony and cooperation.
"Although I confess that at
times I also felt discord in the
harmonious relationship among
the various groups, it was not to
such an extent as to be of any
ill-effect.
"I have' also been greatly im-
pressed with the intellectual life
which has reached, in my opin-
ion, great heights. I saw, for
instance, the beginning of an
art museum in many a small
Kvutzah. I also saw many fine
libraries. This is true testimony
to the fact that there is culture
in those little Kibutzim. Kvut-
zot and Moshavim."
