Born of Strife and Struggle:

Legendary 'Captain Toy' Gallops
To Glory in. News Starting Today

A legendary hero, "Captain
Toy", born of the strife and
struggle of Israeli pioneers,
greets the readers of The Jewish
News beginning with this issue.
The first installment is on. page
20.
Mounted atop his faithful
steed, "Mazal", the illustrious
"Captain Toy' gallops the sandy
plains of ISrael's Negev Desert
to ward off the attacks of Arab
bedouin marauders and to aid
pioneer settlements just as in
the glorious days of the old
American West.
Love and Adventure
Those adventures live again
in the near-Eastern frontiers of
Israel through the "Adventures
of Captain Toy." Together with
the adoration of the fair "Aviva"
and the gratitude of his Israeli
comrades, "Captain Toy" trades
blows and matches wits with
the treacherous Arab bandit
chieftan "Haj Musa."
In the background of these
realistic adventures are depicted
the day to day life and prob-
lems of the pioneers and build-
ers of the new nation of Israel.
Son of New Nation
"The Adventures of Captain
Toy" was conceived in the minds
of two veteran newspapermen
impressed by the heroic
achievements of the Israeli peo-
ple. Through the adventures of
"Captain Toy", which means
"Good" in Hebrew, the creators
of the strip, -Joe Harrison Fried
and Henry W. Larson, relate
the story of a new nation in the
adventures of t h e legendary
hero, "Captain Tov".
Fried has been engaged _ in

-

newspaper work since the age

of 13. He worked - actively with
the Zionist movement during
the recent critical years in the

establishment of the Jewish
State.
Larson is known for his re-
cent expose of Communist
"front" organizations and the
Stockholm "peace" petitions.

stores on the atom-bomb test and
other far-flung frontiers, Fried
shaped his charaCters for what
was later to become "Captain
Toy", the "Cohens", and other
Jewish comic and feature strips.
Interestingly enough, the ar-
tist of the "Adventures of Cap-
tain Toy" is a non-Jew. He's
John Belcastro, a veteran of
World War II and a resident of
New York City.
Since beginning the "Toy"
strip, Belcastro has acquired, a
large Jewish library and is
building a collection of Israeli
photographs and art.
