Of 19 Cities on Car
Reaching. Tel Aviv

Bespattered with about 300
luggage labels from hotels of 19
European and North African
cities, and carrying a banner,
"The Wandering Jew comes
Home," a small Ford car with
a British number plate caused
a minor sensation when it drove
through Tel Aviv recently.
The vehicle was driven by 25-
year-old Alfred Alalouf, a Lon-
doner, whose parents were Greek
Jews. He left Britain three years
ago, during which time he trav-
eled across Europe, from Fin-
land to Gibraltar, and eastward
along the North African coast
towards Israel. Before reaching
the Libyan frontier he loaded
the car on a ship.
"I had a swell time wherever
I went," Mr. Alalouf, a red-hair-

Rabbi's Election Brings
Applause from Truman

When President Harry S. Tru-
man presided at the installation
ceremonies of Masonic Grand
Lodge of Missouri in St. Louis,
among the new officers was
Rabbi Samuel Thurman of St.
Louis, who became grand chap-
lain.
The president called attention
to the fact that he and Rabbi
Thurman have been friends for
40 years. He asked reporters
present to read the prayer
which Rabbi Thurman delivered
on the day of President's inau-
guration. It came from his
heart, said the president, and

NEW YORK, • (JTA) — A decla-
ration calling for the unification
of both General Zionist factions
in Israel—the General Zionist
Party and the Progressive Party
—was adopted by the national
executive committee of the Zion-
ist Organization of America fol-
lowing an all-night session at-
tended by leaders of ZOA from
all parts of the country.
The declaration, presented by
Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, empha-
sized that the unification of both
General Zionist groups in Israel
is imperative for the strengthen-
ing of the Zionist movement "as
the great representative of world
Jewry and its chief instrument
for mobilization its moral ma-
terial resorces for the upbuild-
ing of the Jewish state.
Dr. Silver also called upon
American Zionists to give whole-
hearted support to the aims of
the National Planning Confer-
ence for Israel, held in Wash-
ington last week-end.
• He appealed for even greater
support in behalf of an enlarged
United Jewish Appeal and for
the projected Israel bond issue,
if and when such a loan drive
is launched.
Benjamin G. Browdy, ZOA
president, termed the split in
the General Zionist front in
Israel—which took place more
then two years ago, prior to the
first elections—as "nothing short
of a misfortune, both for the
state of Israel and • for General
Zionism."
He asserted that the political
situation in Israel and General
Zionism the world over could
be different today, had it not
been for the split in the General
Zionist ranks, which in turn
Sent into the electoral campaign
in Israel two or even three Gen-
eral Zionist groups, instead of
one united General Zionist
party.
